After you pump in the 3 quarts that you drained out DO NOT get the tranny flushed!!! If you do decide to go to the dealership then only have them do a drain and refill!!! :crapstorm:

Get the right fluid. Believe it’s Toyota ATF-WS. Pump in 3 qts or if you can accurately measure the amount drained with a graduated bucket, measure that then add the same amount and you should be fine.

    ATF-WS at a Toyota dealership.
Get a cheap pump at Autozone.

Thanks to all those who chimed in so far,

if i do in fact need to go through the whole procedure with the obd, thermostat, temp monitoring etc that is over my head and I will tow it to dealer and bite the bullet.

If in fact I can just refill three quarts then I will proceed with that option. Seems like two separate ideas being floated here just want to make sure I’m not endangering the vehicle at all

    Again thanks for your help

Can you accurately measure what you took out? ie was it drained into an empty vessel?

Accurately measure what you took out and put that much ATF-WS back in. That most likely would be all you need to do. If you want to be certain, you can then drive it to the dealer for a fluid check once you do that.

If you don't have a 24mm socket, you'll need one for the fill port.

Mark the level with a sharpie and use that as a guide. Honestly, for your specific situtaion the only point to bringing the trans up to temp is if you dont think the factory did it right. This is not a disaster. I think you're all good.

If it hasn't already been mentioned, don't even start the truck if the pan is empty. The trans pump runs whenever the engine is on.

    It's really not that hard.

Slap the plug back on, remove the 24mm fill plug and pump in 3 quarts.

If your tranny actually takes 3 quarts then there is no need to check the level because you are just replacing what you lost and filling it back to the fluid capacity specification of the pan.

    End of story.

The dealer does not need to get their nasty highway robbery charging hands on this because this is not an overly complex procedure which requires their intervention.

No photo handy, but it's above the pan on the passenger side of the tranny body. Has the letters "WS" molded into the face.

Edit: Look at the procedure linked earlier. There's a pic of the fill plug. Truck in the photo is 2WD, but the plug is the same for 4WD and is in a similar location.

It's ok, your man card has only been temporarily suspended. We will lift the suspension as soon as you get your transmission filled properly again.
