I did the below DV trip in November of 2018 over 3 days. I'm 2wd locked and didnt have one issue the whole trip. Though I would have not done it without having 4WD friends with me. Though we did Lippencott east to west...I may have had issues had we done it west to east.. Same with Mengal Pass, did it west to east...east to west would have been difficult in a couple of sections.

Picture album form that trip here https://flic.kr/s/aHskMMfASu

    Just the basics
Balut I'm going to suggest you pick up a copy of Roger Mitchell's Death Valley SUV trails. It has geographical, historical, and off-roading information. Please do some research prior to your trip. Google information at the least. There is a lot of information on the interwebs which can answer most of your questions. Don't go unprepared.

Thank you! I've been reading a lot and researching! I will check out Roger Mitchell book though! I hate being unprepared.

West to East is uphill. There are a few loose rock areas that may be a bit of a challenge for 2wd such as myself.

this F150 was stuck and abandoned almost to the top of Lippincot. the left rear drive wheel had dug itself into a hole full of golfball sized gravel up to the axle. if he'd been going downhill I bet it would not have got stuck. not exactly a hard section of road.

I've only been down it once from east to west. Those drop offs will make you pay close attention to your wheel placement for sure.

Fun times trying to maneuver around these guys who had been broken down since the day before and were partially blocking the road, they were about 2 miles from the top.

Says they are asking for community input for solutions. I understand the DoD has a whole bunch of land mines they need to dispose of someplace. The antitank ones are quite good at not blowing up folks on foot. Just saying we could solve two problems at once pretty effectively while saving the taxpayer money!

More than likely, these are trails people have created over years and chronicled by DV.

Since this is a National Park and there are visitors who have likely done damage and are NOT OHV related or are here from another state, I feel like they shouldn't be collecting funds from the OHV fund. Harsh as it may seem, those funds are to support California's OHV programs, etc., and not a National Park's inability to police or manage visitors.

I gotta agree with you here. Want to stop it from happening? Hire more LEO's and have them do their job. I wonder if there's a precedent for a National Park using state funds?

I'm all for educating the masses and repairing/blocking the illegal trails. I'm not a fan of using a limited state fund to offset a National Parks budget.
