Just got my bumper and winch mounted and am currently suing the hook it came with. I’m eyeballing some of those factor 55 beauties though. My concern is theft. Spending $250+ on the fancy ultra hook or even $70+ on a thimble make me me wonder how often these things get stolen. Is there anything in them that locks them to the line so someone can’t just snag them? Any one have any thoughts or tricks they use? Thanks!

a Thief is not going to take the time to undo the snap ring and pull it off the line.

if they can easly get to the cable, then they could cut the cable and take the while piece to disassemble later.

The guys at Warn seem to think their hooks are plenty safe, but if you want to shell out a ton of money for a flashy one, I'm sure Factor 55 has a $50 lock option you can buy to secure it.

They make a $25 locking bolt for your winch, so I'm sure they make some sort of lock for their uber pricey hooks.

I've got an ultrabook, it stay tight against my fairlead. Even if the snap ring was removed, a thief would have to have a hammer and punch to beat the pin out since it has so much tension on it. I'm sure it could be done but not quickly...

I also have the rope guard on mine and my winch is behind my bumper so cutting the synthetic rope would be hard. Regardless, I hope to never have that issue!

I honestly wouldnt get a flathook, or ultrahook.. a thimble may be ok... but I plan to stick with a hook for the time being. eventually I will rethink this, but not a fan of the limits that the shackle has depending on the straps you have (tree straps, and or extension straps).

Isn’t the ultra hook supposed to be the best of both the hook and the thimble? Why stay away from it? Is it janky garbage? Looks sweet.

IT LOOKS SWEET, BUT NOT $250 SWEET.. aluminum is easily damaged/scraped up and if you watch this vid https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcRtMsQ_3qA he gives good reason why he switched back to a hook (he damaged his ultrahook partialy due to abuse/negligence, and replaced it with a warn EPIC hook). not to mention if the straps ever do snap/break, there is less mass on the end of the rope in case of failure (I know most of you have synthetic, but better to err on the side of safety, than have regurts(joke) later, also less to cary during recovery/hookup. all you'd need is a treestrap, and spool out your rope/hook.

Man why would he go through all the effort and expense replacing the line and hook but not replace that boogered fairlead though?

I will say the ultrahook does chip easy, chipped mine on the first use. But I do like the flexibility it provides so I'd buy another. It was expensive but I don't waste a lot so a splurge here and there is okay by me.

Sorry if I'm getting a little OT but I just set mine up like this. $50 between the clevis and the isolator, cinched down tight enough so the pin can't be turned by hand. If a thief is savvy enough to release the clutch they won't have any reason to cut the line.

That's what their marketing department wants you to think. Of course it's THE BEST. It cost $250.

The problem with those thimble styles is they automatically introduce another point of failure, and another thing to fly through the air. Those combo ones are just bigger and heavier, too.

using a regular hook attached to the loops on a tree strap is perfectly fine.

Has anyone found a way to protect the exposed portion of winch line without buying a factor 55 or similar option?

I assume this is for synthetic line... my warn m8000s came with an abrasion sleeve. I keep that over the exposed line to reduce damage from exposure.

Just the essentials and no extra fluff.
Masterpull has a new “light” option. Soft eye with a puck style keeper that is captive in the loop. It doesn’t look like they’re selling just the keeper though.
