Also, it has that little indent on one of the fenders, so the rears are for a 01-04 double cab, yes?

Umm not positive on that but yes it looks to have the indent. Did the ext cab flare for gas door have indent at all?

The first style flares (1998- 2000) were white if ordered as a replacement and were fiberglass. I purchased all 4 in 2000 for my 1997.
In 1998 when they first appeared on the TRD 4x4 & Pre-runners, they were black only and then Toyota started color matching to the body on the "LIMITED" models in late 98. Then in 2001 or 02 they went to another style flare which was wider and more pronounced. I think this style was the last for the 1st Gen. NOTE: When looking at the parts diagrams, there was a Stainless fender moulding on the deluxe models and can be confused or mistaken for the original black TRD flares, the style shown in the OP's first post. My 1997 Deluxe came with the Stainless mouldings and were a very thin moulding or wheel well trim. The pics in the parts diagram make the 2 options look very similar and confusing but the price is what gives you the distinction, the TRD Flares are more than twice the cost of the stainless wheel well trim. Hope this helps

Some great info here thank you. If I am reading this right, you are saying there were 3 types of flares over the years (4 if you add in the stainless trim version), this is also what I am gathering where as previously I was thinking there were only two types of flares. I dont think I am alone in this one and seemed this thread was long over due! I am thinking mine are the mid year and medium width flares at this time.. if I got this all right?!

It is not missing any tabs, what you are not seeing (due to the angle of the pic) is the other 3 mounting holes that are on the flat section of the flare where you think there should be more tabs. I hope this makes sense

Taking a look at car-parts.com to see what I can find (even though this site is sorely outdated from my experience shopping for Tacoma and 4runner seats) shows to confirm 3 various set of flares that fit my 2002.

Interestingly they refer to them also by JAPAN or USA. I know my Tacoma was made in California, are there other made in Japan that were shipped out to the states or why are they listing Japan on some of these, any one know?

First time I have seen parts broke down by geographic region like this. Toyota fender flares are really fun to learn about!!

For the additional knowledge we were all waiting for, I can get a full brand new OEM SRunner fender flare set today, cheapest I could find was a measly $1120 shipped for all 4!!

Piecing together used stuff on ebay I can get 3 out of four for $513, but I cant locate a used rear left: 75874-35900. If I add a new one for $337 brings me to the cheapest I could get total of $850.

This is well over twice what I paid for the set in the OP, but are they twice as cool, or maybe 3x cooler!!!?!!!

Just my first crack shopping to get some ballparks going, I will call the yards and see what they tell me. Anyone have a super smoking hookup for oem stuff by chance?!!

Finally a good identifier I had not realized, I suppose the fatter flares need the indent to not impede the filler door. Good catch here!

Funny and yet sadly the seller did inform me when he went to check the part he found a mounting tab was cracked. I am not really sure I want to get into fiberglass repair just yet and dont think I am ready to dump $1100 on new flares at this point in time. Other used ones I found are really pricey as well and all need work..

Cant wait to see how the ones I purchased look now!!

Well I finally got these and did the quick hold them up to the fender mockup view, and although they are in great shape as seen in the op I think they are indeed a bit wide for the setup I am going to run and my taste.

These would be quite nice if I was running some wider wheels with less offset that hung outside the fenders a bit, but I found some OEM Lexus wheels with a 45mm offset that set in the fender wells nicely and reckon I may not be needing any fender flares for the time being. Of course I may change my mind once I get all 4 wheels and tires on there, I seem to change direction many times during my vehicular ownership!

    20200212_201053 (1).jpg

Guess I may have to find a new home for these OEM flares or add them to my own "collection".. Suppose I'll chalk it up this cost to r & d, but at least they were cheaper than SRunner flares!

Oh yeah, and feast them eyes Tacoma world masses, I do have an offroader too back there just for you!!

Indeed! 2000 Limited with the locking diff, lift, 285 Ridge Grapplers, etc, etc.

I had this thing for years as my daily/offroad adventure machine, and it really makes my little Tacoma feel like a sports truck!!

Does anybody know if it makes a difference where you put the red and blue pop in clips?

Take these part #'s and hit up your favorite parts dealer to see if anything is still available... links below to my local oem wholesaler.

    Front Left: 75872-35900
    Front Right: 75871-35900
    Rear Left: 75874-35900, Step-side: 75874-35901
    Rear Right: 75873-35900, Step-side: 75873-35901

The front left is already listed as "No Longer Available", and I wouldnt be super shocked if this is the case where these parts are so old that the inventory is not there anymore, even though its listed. This has happened to me on more than one occasion when I thought I was getting a hold of some vintage oem gold!! So if you want them act fast..

I ended up not going this route since it is more of a cosmetic thing that looks nice but to me not really worth more than half the cost I paid for my truck! Total for all 4 is over $1500 then you need to have them painted as well... $2k+ flares basically.

But I say you get the last set in existence and be proud! I am happy with my current stance, big fat tires that dont stick out beyond the fender wells:

    20220605_193022 (2).jpg

Good luck and let me know if you are able to actually pull this off please!!

Thanks for the information. The truck looks great without the flares because the wheel/ tire set up doesn’t stick out like you said . Good job!
