It absolutely amazes me how the rust tears up these Tacoma trucks back East and in the rust belt.

As a kid I went to school in Still River Massachusetts and remember plenty of cars being eaten up by the rust.
In Colorado it’s something I’ve almost forgotten about but reminded about it here on TW.

it tears up body panels in the rear wheel wells and rocker panels of ALL trucks after a certain age, some like Dodges are much worse in the body panels.
but the Toyota frame coating is not too thick i think to withstand chemicals seeping through, very paper thin
but i don't know, i am learning as i go lol
i have tests to do on other makes of trucks at the salvage lot with my hammer still to see what frames i can bust up as easily as the Tacomas have been, all but one so far
lots of dodges chevy and fords there

Too bad this year CDOT started using salt on the front range again. We've officially joined the rust belt.

have you driven through a lot of road sand over the years?
that is basically what i remember mainly driving through in the late 90s and early 2000s on the highways here with minimal salt unless there was a lot of ice that needed melted
now they put salt down today on main roads for just a wee bit of blowing flurries with 30mph winds and single digit temps

My truck drove cross country and through Canada in the winter multiple times with the previous owners so mine on the slightly worse end of Colorado frames. But it's cleaned and recoated now. Nothing more than very slight pitting in the heavy impacted areas like near the rear tires.

I was gonna say, no salt in Colorado? You get way more winter type precip than here in MA, no? Or is it just not as icy? What do or did they use, sand? I used to commute to VT once/week working for a logger, doing firewood & it is or was no salt as well & although I appreciated the rust & environmental factors, it made for some dicey driving. Always meant to look up what they used on the roads instead....

For years and years Colorado used sand but maybe 5 years ago so maybe more they switched to mag chloride.

5 days ago it was 74 degrees a day later it was zero degrees.

The temperature here warms up and things melt even in the middle of winter, not like your state where the cold usually sticks for a long time

Gotcha. I like that. Sounds better than the months of cold, cold & windy or cold. I've traveled out west, WA & back. Did 80 on the return trip, so unfortunately didn't get to Colorado.
    So much to see....

The issue and why they don't use salt as often not do they use it in the Rockies (besides I-70) is that salt lowers the freezing point of water, a 10% salinity level freezes at 20° instead of 32°, however many places in Colorado get much lower than that at night, and where I live didn't get above 16° sitting the day and it's going to be -3° overnight, rendering salt useless for how much damage is done to vehicles, understructure, and the harm to the water system.
Where I live it's gravel all the time, occasionally mag cloride on the major highways, 50 and 135, but that's only when we get above 20°. We also just leave any non-major street snow covered November-the next spring.
