I get the sentiment, but I don't see that being remotely possible with these engines. Direct injection and port injection, VVT etc. Throttle is definitely funky on these and I don't think it will ever perform like you would expect an older engine to. Regardless of who is tuning it.

    Hi guys,
I've done a number of searches through various forums, including the software update forum and I thought I'd check here...

I've got my OVTUNE software and cable, and I flashed 1.05, it was a lot better than stock as I am working from 04B10.

My question is related to what seems like limited options thus far with 04B10 (just 87,91 and 93). I can't even get FOB to work (flash unuccessful), there are no 1.05.1 options for me that will download in the drop down, none of the 2.0 beta stuff will currently work so... My assumption is that I need to use my new cable + techstream and the software update attachments from the MT software update forum and update the ECU first, and then take advantage of the other tunes. Am I correct on this?

I used to love and still do love sunroofs actually because I'm fancy as fuck.... but I rarely actually use them anyway.

Bumped my head not once, not twice, but three times on the headliner while test driving one with a sunroof. Couldn't check my blindspot without getting bopped in the head.

    Sweet, thanks!
I've got to drive out to my clinical rotations about 100 miles tomorrow I'll do that on 87 base, I've got 3 days of rotations including a 24 hour ER rotation so I'll probably just do it up there and drive it home all updated.

Should i upload to the newest version of techstream (as listed in your signature) or use the 12.10.019?

A little sad. There seems to be only one tune option for my 04A70 which is an 87 base tune 1.05.

Edit - looks like there is a FOB option which looks like the Manual Transmission Performance tune. I'll give that a shot.

You can also apply the TSB update, be at 04A71, and use the Beta tunes as well.

It's related to throttle values that are learned over time. I've been trying to find a way to default set / permanent value but it doesn't seem possible, yet.

Same issue for the ATs. Had a customer actually test and confirm he can get the brake override consistently right after a flash if he doesn't reset the values, but if he does, no brake override.

And the truck can brake override because of throttle.

Everything, almost all "issues" or "learn back to stock" or "feels number" etc over time is all related to this stupid throttle airflow learning.

Now why have throttle airflow learning? It's one way for your tune to clean itself overtime for rough tables. It's another thing Toyota does to try to GUESS, not kidding, look it up in the overhaul manual, to GUESS manifold pressure differential vs baro by angle. Because adding a 0 to 5 v map sensor and writing a calibration for it is just too easy vs trying to create an equation to guess the pressure inside the manifold.

Then, when the airflow actual exceeds calculated guess, correction factors are applied, and applied over time, and the ECU does throttle angle limiting and conditioning to "clean it up."

This is why higher gears for example, you full throttle in 6th, and get maximum allowed 40 percent, or 45 percent throttle. Because at those low rpm that's all the ecu calculates what's needs to meet demand airflow and torque.

The ECU uses calculated torque vs optimal torque vs torque limit, takes the mean of the value and uses it as the torque axis for allowable throttle angle by rpm.

Optimal + limit divide by 2, compare to calculated actual, set throttle limit by ratio of difference.

    It's absolutely terrible design.

I hated (hate) learning on our turbo cars and mostly hate the learning on the Tacos. Most everyone that is in tune (is an enthusiast) seems to not like ECU learning. I always hated driving our turbos after my wife had been driving it for a while. They would spool slow and low. It took a lot of wasted fuel to bring them back to life.

It is understandable that not much can be done about it. Just that it seems to not really help anything either after the first few miles.

Edit, based on your edits. It is amazing that Toyota does not have a MAP sensor on a dual injection motor with a heated MAF sensor, VVTi-W, and all the other hardware.

Some calibrations don't have obsessive learning corrections, other than normal stuff like ignition trimming, fuel trimming, knock trimming. Standard stuff.

Really the only calibrations I can think of off the top of my head that has absurd, multi layered labyrinth of code with complex table calculation, learning over time, 4th and 5th axis layered tables, is Ford.

But funny enough even with Fords crazy, and I mean crazy way of how they create their tunes, axises, calculation of axises...their engines run (when they run) at near peak possible performance for conditions all the time.

Ford goes to the far end of extreme too, calculating LSPI limits, calculating difference in heat time of the aluminum alloy block vs head. Real crazy stuff.

    Very interesting.

I get that Toyota is investing a lot of its future on the 3.5l and that some of the Taco hardware and software is for long term development, but damn.

Like you said about Ford, at least their software works.

I still remember how whacky 04B12 was. Like driving a brand new MT that I never really adapted to. There was no relaxing, easy shifts. 04B13 and your tunes are like butter.

Even S# needs a couple adaption runs to get happy. I absolutely love the 2.0 DiT for what it does when the CVT gets out of the way. I still haven't had a chance to try it in the WRX.
