I assume the bed is a glass mat SMC.. but was curious if anyone knew exactly what was in the core of this thing? Or is it not REALLY SMC as advertised and just solid powder re-enforced plastic resin?

No reason.. just wondering. Might help determine its resilience.. ya know.. psi that would be reasonable to expect it to stand up to. FIgured it would have come up in an early 2005 thread, but if it is, they're not using my vocabulary.

Far as I know it's a sheet molded composite with no reinforcement. Toyota states to treat it like you would any other pickup bed. So...

no its not an island. Though its amazing for 15 years... well I'll just leave it with, I can't wait to retire and move to a functioning community where things get done. Say, anywhere north of west virginia.

Well I'm sure there's something in it. But maybe not a sheet in the middle, which would be a good waste of SMC process. If it can even be called that.

I have drilled holes in it and the "shavings" seem to be consistent throughout.

I don't think there is a core. Considering the Owens-Corning's description of the SMC process http://composites.owenscorning.com/processes/Sheet_Molding_Compound.aspx
I don't think it allows for a core. I've drilled as well, up by the drainholes to make them bigger and to mount a fire extinguisher in the side above the cover cubbie hole. Both with no restriction the whole way through, its like drywall...just a little harder. Toyota claims to have a core in this material? Of what?
