I went from a 2017 Tacoma to a 2019 Tundra and they are VERY different vehicles. I didn’t really need the Tundra, but wanted to try another full size, since I’ve been driving Tacomas since 2008. There’s no comparison between space and power. The Tundra has tons of both. The drivetrain is really smooth and it rides great.

The Tacoma is, obviously, quite a bit smaller and the drivetrain isn’t as smooth. But, I can see why someone would consider going from a Tundra to a Tacoma. The Tundra is pretty thirsty and it can be a pain to park and navigate city streets. I think the Tacoma is probably a better daily driver, but you have to be prepared to give up the space and comfort afforded by the Tundra. If you’re okay with that and you like the way the Tacoma drives, go for it. Just make sure you take into account who/what you’re hauling in the back seat, how much payload/ towing capacity you need, and also take some extended test drives to get a feel for the Tacoma.

 

Haha yes that is one of my favorite features on the Tundra.

 

Have they fixed the gear hunting issue for the 2020 year models? I have seen a lot of people say that they have noticed a difference in the transmission behavior.

 

i came from a 2013 mazda CX-5 AWD sport.. my tacoma is lightyears faster, although the cabin space is a little less, and I do hate that the steering wheel height stops are too low for me.. it can be made comfortable, and is my daily driver.. I have driven for hours in my tacoma without issues.. my 19 year old step daughter doesnt like the back seats as they are not comfortable, and not a lot of leg room. but i didnt buy the truck for her... I get sub 18.4MPG with just 265/70/17 tires on 17x8.5 rims. add on the RTT, and 250lbs of gear, and a passenger or two, and it winds up being closer to 17MPG max... not horribly concerned with the MPG, but it does impact how much fuel I need for longer trips in the NMW (north Maine Woods- no gas stations for MILES, unless you cross over into canada).. but with my current setup i can easily carry 12 gallons of fuel in 2 jerry cans in the bed, and a full 20 gallon tank 500miles range... thinking of this really reminds me I need an inReach mini.....

 

I never had a 3rd gen before 2020, so I don't have a baseline for "gear hunting". But I will say that my 2020 is better than my 2013.

 

LOL - All he is saying is buy the Tacoma and do all of that plus some off road while you at it!!!!

 

As per usual on TW, absolutely no one has addressed the question on your OP lol. I don't notice a huge difference in the ride height between my Tundra and my Tacoma. Maybe ask in the suspension forum. Good luck.

Also, FWIW, if I wasn't towing 6k lbs of TT, I'd be back in a midsized truck in a heartbeat.

Edit: looks like ground clearance on the stock Tundra is about 1.2" higher. That's an easy lift on the Taco.

 

Love my Tacoma, came from a 2nd Gen so been driving them for the last 13 years. Test drive, test drive, test drive, the 3rd Gen drivetrain seems to be a miss for a lot of people on here, and coming from Tundra I feel like you’ll feel this for sure.

I’m probably going to move up to a 3/4 or 1 ton but that is purely for my own needs. Going on my own, mobile mechanic.

 

You need a diesel Sprinter van with dual rear wheels.
