Right?! On my previous vehicle, I went 5 years on my original windshield. The one on the Tacoma seemed to have a billion pits within the first year.

Im sure they can, but if you dont see the "legs" coming out from the center of the chip, i wouldnt worry about it.

Yep, and usually when windshields crack, cracks go in sharp lines, from what ive noticed anyway. When this windshield cracks, it goes in circles. Ive seen a lot of other local tacos with similar pattern. I think its something to do with their acoustic windshields now days.

Am I reading this right? It costs that much to replace windshields? Geez. I can recall years ago replacing one on a Kia Sephia (a small low-end 4-door) and it cost like $150.

Thats how it is nowdays, especially if a vehicle has sensors, they need to "calibrate" it after windshield installation.

Damnn.. Mine just cracked 2 days ago, the crater of the impact is super tiny that you can barely feel it with your finger but the crack line is 6 inches long, I think its more of an internal damage. Its on the passenger side so its really doesnt bother me but i want it neat and clean. I dont even know how to talk to Toyota about replacing the windshield because of the sensor.
How about aftermarket solutions? Any ideas?

You dont need toyota to replace it for you. You can go to your favourite glass shop, not all locations do calibrations though.

Also, the sensor stays in the truck when they take out the glass.

Now its just the waiting game of when I want to replace my windshield.
Im worried about the calibration. If say my glass shop do calibrations would it void my warranty? If i ask toyota to do it how much would be the estimated?

I had a local glass shop replace my glass and calibrate after. Did not void the warranty.

I went through my insurance so i paid 200$ deductable only, but the total bill was around 1100. I believe around 250 was for calibration if i remember correctly, i might be wrong though.

Has anyone skipped calibration? Can you comment on any issues?

My parents skipped calibration on a CRV and everything works fine.

I assume its the camera mounted to the windshield, but I have a hard time believing it really needs calibrated. There are a lot of lifted trucks, which slightly change its viewing angle of the road. And I haven't seen complaints about things not working after a lift.

I'm guessing its Toyota being paranoid for liability reasons, and the installers making an extra $250.

If/when I need a windshield, I'd skip it and see what happens.

Camera, as in a dash cam? That's something you just add on your own with no calibrating needed.

Its the Lane assist sensor not a dashcam

My windshield just cracked from the bottom up. Not caused by any impact. I was actually in stop and go traffic and heard it crack and there it was, an 8" crack coming from the bottom going up, on the passenger side, about 18" from the right side and behind the scoop, so no stone could have hit it there. Only thing I can think of is I had my defrost on full heat. I've seen cracks happen like this (from temperature) but it's usually from a pre existing impact. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. I feel like it should be warranty as there is no evidence of an impact. My experience with dealerships has been very poor which is why I do all my own repairs. Also, I have a high deductible so using comprehensive for coverage might be off the table.

Have had my Taco for a year now, replacing the glass for the first time later this month. I was hit by a fairly large rock kicked up by some idiot in a lifted F250 with M/T's on 22's with a +1000mm offset, so I'm not blaming the windshield in the slightest. On the bright side, the first crack that appeared was only 10" or so in length for most of the winter. It finally grew another 3" two mornings ago during a cold snap. Insurance will be covering the replacement at the end of the month, no additional money out of my pocket.

For the record, this isn't meant to support "Tacoma windshields break a lot", the size of the rock I got hit with would've broken almost any windshield, I'm sure. But the glass has maintained its integrity quite well over the last 3 months of fluctuating winter weather.

It is sad to see that a lot of people just do NOT take pride on what they do...... crapy job talks about who you are..... it is not just about being underpaid or so..... do it right, you will move up in life....

    sorry OP to see that.

I skipped calibration and I had some sort of warning, don't remember what, and it didn't go away. I went back to the place and they calibrated it. $800 for everything.
