It's normal. When you drive around gassing it really hard, the transmission holds the gear and wont upshift for a few seconds when you completely let off, only way it will upshift is if you give it light throttle for about a second.

OP, next time your son drives it, when it does the hanging revs thing, tell him to give it really light throttle and be patient and it'll upshift.
It's because he is driving around where he mats it and let's off, then decides to drive normal all of a sudden. Takes a few seconds for the transmission to realize he wants to drive normally again. The truck wont let you bang off the redline in D, it'll upshift, no need to manually upshift it.

The hanging revs thing happened to me too but only when I drove spiritedly. Especially after I sold my manual car and got this automatic truck.

Not really rev hang, it just holds the lower gear. Idk if anyone wants to try it but mat the gas and let it go completely, then do it again, it'll hold the gear and won't upshift so revs stays near redline.
What OP's son is doing is making a right turn then mat it, then have to make another right turn so he brakes, then turns, and mat the gas again, then he let's off because he is going too fast but the transmission doesnt upshift to cruising gears because it thinks he wants to do it again.
I just used the term "hanging revs" because the revs literally just hang out near redline.

Looks like this thread is done, just responding so its clear to OP that it's normal.

Normal if he's mashing the gas to the floor? There's no reason he should be doing that.

He did yes. You can go to banned member memorial thread, its quite amusing. I think it was politics and then he tried to open new account from same IP adress.

He is young and comes from sports cars. Borrows dad's truck and hauls ass in it. It is normal. I used to do the same thing.

That's what he says is happening, he is pretty car savvy. Drives a lot of high end cars.
