I'm too lazy to look back for what you are making this time, so please fill me in: same WTFs like I got previously or a new design? I might be interested again.

Just finished the Neat documentary on Hulu; good stuff... I think I’d have to be terminal to kill a 20yo pappy in one sitting though.

It's the same design as the previous. If you want something special though we can also do that.

Just watched Neat as well, pretty cool Doc. Nothing groundbreaking in terms of information but it was definitely a fun watch! I met that guy Freddy in the Buffalo Trace souvenir shop, I didn't know who he was but I could tell he was well liked and kind of important cause everybody went out of their way to say "Hey Freddy!" to him. It was interesting to hear some of his back story. Also did a tasting in that room that the guy from Four Roses was doing his interview in before going to do a barrel pick. So for me personally, that was kinda fun to bring me back to that time so to speak. Anyways, thanks for the recommendation whoever brought it up on here.

Took a tour of a distillery in Brooklyn last week, quite good. It is a few blocks away from 6 Point brewery another favorite. 20200209_165638.jpg 20200125_165006.jpg

Just polished off my bottle of Compass Box Great King Street Artists Blend, single marrying cask. While the name is definitely a mouthful, it's definitely one of my all time favorites. They take the regular Artist Blend and put it in a french oak barrel for another year. If you look up buttery, creamy and vanilla in the dictionary it should have a picture of this bottle. I get this from Total Wine at about $6 over the regular bottle. Love this stuff, absolutely worth the $.

Oh my! I want a bottle of that. It sounds absolutely delicious. I love everything about Compass Box and think it's really cool that they are doing store selections like the bourbons are.

I'm prepping for having some people over on Saturday for our 2nd annual Booker's night. We'll be sampling all of the batches from 2019. There will be 10 of us.

I might be going a little overboard with the scoring system, but I'm nerdy like that.

I have a Google Sheet that I can update from my phone. The sheet is connected to a Power BI report that I built. Everyone will give a score on the nose, palate, and finish for each of the batches. When I put the numbers in, I can refresh the BI report and visualize everyone's score. You can also see an average score for each and a composite score that weighs each category of the scoring.

On this individual batch pages, there is some info pulled from the Booker's site, batch info (barrel locations and ratios), and a picture of the label. I downloaded the labels, extracted the RGB values, converted the HEX, then created a custom color palette in Power BI so that the background pages exactly match the label colors :D.

There are a few jokes thrown in the scoring table on the first page, plus an inside one (I have an irrational aversion to folks referencing the "mid-tongue").

Visually, these aren't quite up to the standards of some of the data analytics I do at work, but for a pet project thrown together in a couple of evenings, they'll do the trick. Functionally, it is really great. They didn't export in too great a resolution, but here they are. All data-points are randomized at the moment and provided strictly as proof-of-concept. I'll share our real ratings after the tasting.

I still need to create a page for a recap of all of the scores so that they can be compared to each other. I'll have a page that shows all of the scores by rater and a page showing all of the scores by batch (I think combining them will get cluttered).

That's really cool! It certainly looks like you've put a lot of effort into it. If I were one of your guests, I would definitely be impressed.

But just a little heads up...it's Clermont not Clearmont (the warehouse location on the first page).

Oops! Embarrassing. I haven't proofread it, but I'm glad you caught it! Might have slipped under the radar. I'll update now! Thanks a bunch.

    Yeah, it's pretty nerdy.

I'm trying to convince the Whiskey Crusaders to keep better notes of their reviews and in a consistent manner. I'll start populating a database (price, type, floral/smokey/peaty/spicy/etc., rarity, score, etc.) and then we can unleash a tool that all of their subscribers can use to sift through certain tags to see what whiskies they've reviewed, where they rated, etc.

As I finish off the Michters sour mash and H. McKenna I think Im going Japanese, I really think so. On deck, Kaiyo Mizunara Oak whisky. I've been on a bourbon kick and have drawn down my bottles to an acceptable level while building up my Japanese collection, so it's time to start on those.

The last page is great. Everything acts a slicer, so you can click a batch and see each rater's score or you can click a rater and see his/her score on each batch. Or just look at all scores for the nose or palate. All sorts of ways to do it, but everything on that page can be clicked to drill down further (chart columns, the legend, names, batches, scores, etc.).

After Saturday, I'll have the real scores to replace the mock data in there now and will share with the group what we all thought.

I really want to try the sour mash, but I can’t seem to find it anywhere. Is it worth the hunt?
