This is really good. I agree with the keep it focused approach completely and it is the SDRdual that got me hooked on HF to begin with. I am curious if the “real” transceivers have better filtering and isolation etc, as I am just guessing they should? Perhaps I’m over thinking this...gee there’s a surprise coming from a ham and taco nut.

I think they're both great radios.

The 7300 has a few things that are noticeably different. It comes with a built in soundcard (digital modes), better waterfall, and the upper pass filter / lower pass filter are individually adjustable by a knob (mine is in a drop down menu, boo) which is very helpful in packed days.

The ftdx-3000 has better filtering, 3 antenna connections with one as a designated rx on a switch, aside from the U/L pass filter all my daily buttons have their own knobs, my sdr comes directly from an rx port from my radio which is great, multiple pre-amp settings, and has a signal contour that yaesu puts in their rigs which really makes a massive difference when digging out weak signals.

    I

Apples to apples, it's a soundcard + waterfall vs better reception and tailoring battle, IMO. I knew I was going to end up with an sdr routed to my computer screen and it became an easy choice for me. Cost was a bit more but as far as core equipment I feel my station is solid.

Overall the ftdx-3000 was the best choice for me and I'd do it again without hesitation. I also hold the 7300 in very high regard

I just hit post when you posted. Hi hi @Cudgel

@Cudgel we could always try to coordinate something with @foy1der so you could have a side by side comparison, and then HRO would let you test the big boy icom. You could draw your own conclusions of what will meet your needs.

I have zero affinity towards any brand.

My photo program is not playing well with others so I'll try to explain. I made a slid in piece that fits inside the bed rails (1/4 AL bar) it is threaded 1/4 20 the antennas are mounted on AL angle I loosely tighten the angle and slid it and the angle iron/backing plate where I want then tighten the button head stainless screws. They are for the 2/440 and the 220 antenna. The HF antenna is a screwdriver lil tarheel. It is on a ball mount inside of the bed mounted to the rear bulkhead the upper part of the antenna below the load coil is mounted same as the angle then a piece of lexan is mounter to that to stiffen the entire affair assembly. The stinger 56" it waves around a good bit so the lexan mount makes it rocksteddy. The antenna assembly is RF hot so the lexan insulates it from the body work. The nice part of the entire scheme is all of the antennas are inside of the bed.

I’m likely going for the FTDX-3000D as well. It’s features are similar but it is newer and well tested.

I would agree with everything that @m603holden said. Honestly, modern radios are so good, that it's hard to go wrong. the 7300 and the 3000 are both stellar choices.

I'm for the 7300 the main reason over the others is buttons! I love the touchscreen everything is right there. I looked at a high end Kenwood online and started counting the buttons lost track at 52. Had a lot of radios over the 30 years as a ham the 7300 is a winner in all respects it's a whole lot of radio for under a $1,000.

The wife needs her technician class license. I read the ARRL book as study material but that probably isn't the best method for her. Anyone know of a good YouTube channel that has a start to finish technician class?

Hamstudy.org. Take practice tests over and over. They highlight the sections you miss. Pass about 20x in a row (test is redundant word for word). Boom
