    Work in progress...
I was researching on here. The EGR VSV, vacuum sensing valve, was causing a similar problem on a TW members 2017 Off Road.

Exactly. Said this in my first post...they won't do the work because they don't pay them the money to do the work...lol

Definition of open circuit. : an electrical circuit in which the continuity is broken so that current does not flow.

    And there ya go.

Picked the truck up this afternoon. Sat down with our service advisor for a nice long chat. The conclusion was there was an internal short found in the ECU. They don’t know what caused it and had not come across that before. He also suggested, quietly and off the record, that it might be of benefit if a call was made to Toyota Corp customer care. Will be calling tomorrow. As second owners of this truck we don’t qualify for lemon law in our state, so he felt maybe Toyota might offer something. Any words of encouragement?

This is the second ECU for this truck so I don't agree with their answer. I've been both ends of this cluster from the tool box to the cash box. Everything he said was code for "love ya, but go away" No offense. With your stated experience I think you probably know this. No loyalty to the customer, employees, anyone. I'd push for a new truck myself. They will work with you I'm sure. Sorry for your experience and hope it ends well. These are great trucks, and this is a good company. Strange as it may seem.

I love Toyota and plan on continuing to drive one, be it the one I currently own, or another if it can be arranged. Thanks for your input

When they put in the third ECU this summer, point them to these forum posts:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/imminent-crankshaft-position-sensor-cps-failure-in-2016s.442304/
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/engine-issues-on-my-3rd-gen.441399/
then ask them to put in a new CPS with the new ECU

    Here's a better thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/engine-issues-on-my-3rd-gen.441399/

Read the above thread. That owner and several others went through the same drama you are experiencing; truck shuts down shows check engine light and trac off light. It is reasonable to think that a CPS failure code or at least some general understanding of this being an existing problem would be in Toyota's Database for techs to reference, but multiple instances prove this to be untrue. Read poster TRUGGIN's story, it will be worth the time. Just scroll to the bottom of his first post and click on the little arrow above the "Quote" tab it will take you to each of his next posts without reading what everyone else is saying.

BTW in post number 19 in that thread, he states that they told him they checked the CPS, that isn't the problem. post 28 they tear the engine apart replace several parts, tell him it's fixed, post 37 it breaks down same sympoms check engine light trac off light after only 47 miles from repair, post 46 they trade him into a new truck.

Post 65 TRUGGIN reports that he hears from the dealer that they put in a new CPS...truck is finally fixed

Some owners here experienced problems like yours which the dealer can only fix temporarily and came back later. They replaced the cps sensor themselves and problem solved permanently. Just have it replaced . Driving on the freeway and the engine dies on you suddenly is very dangerous ( you may not be so lucky next time) .

Exactly what I was thinking. It's like a fuse, they're not a consumable, they don't just go bad, if something is frying the ECU, replacing the ECU is a bandaid at best. Unfortunately, the flow chart Toyota follows probably doesn't go into much depth.

Yes it would in either a history or pending code or a full on broke as hell code. This is 2020. If something is not working correctly, it will post a code. They want that money..lol. Cam/Crank/VVT solenoid talk to themselves thousands of times a second to deliver the perfect conditions for driving, power and fuel mileage. If one of these parts fail, or think about failing its a problem and the CEL will come on. The VVT is the newest scam where oil viscosity, level, age can affect the solenoid and the shops jump on it for $120. The right thing to do would be change your oil, check your oil level or use the correct oil...cost is minimal. Okay, enough for today...lmao. I'm out.

Throwing parts at cars for no reason has enabled my second retirement. I appreciate that, but its not necessary.

CPS replaced twice in less than a year on a former 2016 due to the exact symptoms you are experiencing.

Yeah but not necessarily. It could be erroneous data, not that the ECU would think the cpk is bad, but that timing was off or something of that nature. If it was erroneous data, there'd be no way the ECU would assume it's a bad cpk. It has to trust/assume that it's functioning correctly.

Car manufacturers discovered long ago that the best way to increase service revenue was to put a check engine light in the dash. All women will immediately head to the dealer when it comes on without giving a single thought. Just like the Eloi when the sirens go off.
