I've had this happen on very rare occasion and returning to neutral and releasing the clutch, then clutch back in and reattempting first gear has worked every time

Very common on most MTs these days with multiple syncros. Swap the MT fluid to Redline MT-90 or the Motorcraft stuff that gets a lot of reccys.

Every manual I've had has done this. I just hit 2 then 1 but i keep the clutch held down the whole time.

I am not a computer programmer, but I write code daily for the financial models I create for my clients.

What I have found is that I can never anticipate all the what-can-go-wrongs for each subroutine that I write. Some situation I never thought of will create a failure.

that’s why I don’t see the value in fooling around with the thousands of lines of code that appear to be behind such a complex system as this corporate 3.5 ECU.

1.5 is already good. It just needs refinement-that’s all.

all these other features arent going to be worth it. The debug/QC time necessary for an undertaking like this isn’t worth it. And could potentially lead to system failures that will ruin a company’s reputation.

hey fellow MT owners. are most of you running the 91 performance tune? can anyone comment on the gains / drivability on 87 octane performance tune. Its great matt provides the graphs, and I do understand what they are accomplishing but how does it actually relate to on road driving. I understand a big part of this tune is to address drivability not just power statistics. I have become used to this transmission and even tho I strongly agree with the issues that are mentioned I don't find it detrimental to my daily driving. from your opinions do you think the tune Is worth the 700$ + cost of a cheap new laptop (300-400$) for the 87 tune only? I know what asking for opinions can be like as everyone has differing views. just looking for a general consensus of the 87 performance tune. If I do proceed with OVtune I will wait for 2.0 release.

yup, I try this but often times it still won’t let me into first. Going to try the fluid change then submit a ticket to the help desk.

I run 87 FOB. The big torque increase down low makes this tune worth it. For me, the difference between the stock tune (04B12) and the TSB tune (04B13) is about the same difference between 04B13 and OVT, esp with FOB. But, it seems that other Tacos respond differently, so YMMV.

For me, I tried the 91 tunes and only missed the small power bump when going back to 87. So, the cost was worth it for me and will pay for itself in about 5yrs with the small MPG bump.

Also, the tune is only about $600 right now with the current sale. Jump on that if you are on the fence.

yeah just to validate this a bit, i've had no issues like this at all since changing my fluid about 40k mi ago or so. all fluids are getting changed in a month at my 60k, and in the last couple weeks i'm getting a little occasional friction going into first. time for a fluid change, on the schedule.

Sounds about right. I was planning to change the fluid at 30k but have been busy (and/or lazy). I'm almost at 33k now and it's starting to let me know that I'm overdue. Going to run the Ford Motorcraft stuff.

The solution for rev hang is to not use more than 1/4 throttle in first or second gear. I can rev to any rpm with light throttle and it will drop rpms in a linear smooth fashion. If I give it half throttle it will hold revs even if I dont get to high rpm. The hang isnt consistent with heavy throttle but never happens with light throttle.
Death to rev hang should be the absolute #1 priority

Trans blocked me out of first at a stop probably 10 times in the first couple of thousand miles. I stopped counting how many times it happened.

It has only happened once since changing to MT-90 fluid. That's been over 1,000 miles so far. So I'd say changing the fluid definitely helped.

This has worked every single time for me as well (regardless of what fluid was in the trans).

This only worked for me maybe 50% of the time. Often times it would only go halfway into engaging first, so sometimes I would sneak it the rest of the way in while gently easing off the clutch.

816, I'd say change the fluid to MT-90 or one of the other recommendations here. Then if it happens again, just try what @mZiggy said.

Honorable mention to @tonered for suggesting MT-90 to me.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming... Friday and Valentine's Day on TW so this evening could definitely get weird.

While I am VERY grateful for OV for working on cool new perks, I would rather have the final 2.0 focused on 100%, then add the map switching, and specific ratio tunes and tire size tunes. However, I get why he might be doing it now since he is already into the code, ext...

In any case, I can wait painterly while he finalizes it.
