No. It was doing exactly what it was supposed to do, which apparently wasn't what YOU wanted it to do. Hence, you are the problem. Not the truck. The truck is fine.

It's not at all about being tough. It's about simply applying logic to a situation. Out of everyone, the millions of people that have this exact engine/transmission combination, a very small percent complain about it. Does it behave differently? You bet it does. Would that mean that something is wrong or "severely flawed" with it? You bet it doesn't... These days, people like to complain about just about everything. It's sad, but true. And it's totally OK that you're a complainer. But maybe try not to have a panic attack about things that are non-issues. Stress kills, dude, and life is short. Just relax and enjoy it. 3G Tacoma stress is the strongest argument yet for the universal legalization of marijuana. Guys need to smoke a spliff and let the concern about their shift points drift off intro a pleasant and meaningless haze.

 

I'm just sad they're not having an enjoyable drive as I am. I love this truck, so much more than my 2nd gen.

 

So I'm a new member here, just picked up my first Toyota ever! I'm pretty technically savvy and have modded many cars, trucks over the years so I understand how ECU's/TCU's work. I too am very frustrated with the transmission behavior on the highway. With the cruise set at 75MPH for example it downshifts constantly and holds the gear WAY too long after it gets back to the set speed. I did find that not using the cruise and driving the same route and speed it seems to work more as expected. Seems like a simple software bug to me? Anyone found a fix other than an aftermarket tune?

 

I do agree that when cruise control is on it tends to hold the gears too long before shifting, especially when driving on steeper highways.

 

According to everyone here that's totally normal and youre the problem. I have the exact same issue but just live with it.

I did a 200 mile trip with my new 2020 this past weekend. Going there, I noticed it would hover in 5th gear most of the time a 75MPH, I could tell as it was over 2K RPM. Also several times when it had to accelerate for an incline then level out, or hit a decline right after, it would stay in 4th. Pushing the shifter over to sport then back over to Drive immediately saw it drop down. On the way back it stayed in 6th most of the time and every time would shift back into 6th after going to 5th or 4th to accelerate. This was with ACC on. The route to and from were the exact same roads. My assumption is if I wasn't using ACC it would shift normally, it's almost like a bug with using ACC by reading what others are saying. The real only difference is the temperature rose by about 20F, from like 10F to 30F but I just find that coincidental.

My 2nd Gen never did this with CC, it would always upshift back to 5th no issues. It's kind of funny as my Outback somtimes does this with CC, it'll run in "5th" and I use quotes as it's a CVT, then up to "6th" and usually seems to be right after I start the car if it hasn't been ran in several hours.

I Only had the 2nd gen for a year and put about 10K on it, my Outback I owned since 2009 brand new and before that had a Stratus and Dakota, so the 2nd gen was the first time in awhile I had something that wasn't a CVT. I kind of feel like the Tacoma is programmed like my Outback's CVT, I'm used to it, aside from the oddness of it not upshifting when it should. Compared to the 2nd gen, it's nice to see it run under 2K RPM when it decides to be in 6th gear vs always over 2K on the 2nd Gen and getting fair worse MPG. The round trip was 16.9MPG by the computer, I feel it would have been much closer to 18 if it had upshifted more on the way there.

 

I'll have to try this next time it decided to stick in 4th and not upshift into 5th or 6th. I know flipping it to S then back to D would make it upshift.

 

It took me awhile to adjust to the shifting patterns in my '16, but that's all it took. A lot of people don't like way they drive with cruise control on hills. I've learned to gradually press down on the accelerator until it upshifts. Laying the pedal completely down will make it feel worst.

 

I have several cars but in this case I replaced an 07 Colorado.

I'll say it again... All Tacomas do not shift the same. I have driven multiple 2020s that shift differently from each other. Such inconsistencies in a mass produced vehicle point to manufacturing QC problems. Also, vibrations and harshness while cruising ans braking are clearly not a "design choice" they point to an issue somewhere in the drive system. So, again, I completely reject the idea that these are not real issues that Toyota needs to address.

In any case, the naysayers in this thread seem pretty culty to me...and I fully understand your point, I just think you're wrong.

You are confusing reliability with quality and ownership experience. They are obviously not all the same thing. I think most would agree that the Tacoma is reliable, meaning it will last a long time without many mechanical failures. However, that is different from quality, which is more about the ownership experience... how the vehicle drives and feels. That's is where the Tacoma falls far short.

Also, sales numbers and quality/reliability have an insignificant relationship to one another. People gleefully buy all kinds of garbage products because they are trendy, aesthetically attractive, group think, etc. not necessarily because they are quality products. Anyone with a brain should realize this.
