Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

Happens on my 2018 04A61 on 2.0 as well usually when pulling out in reverse.

 

My 2018 is all stock and does not do it, so mine must not be keeping certain components lubed.

 

I wonder how much of the surge issues are caused by not letting the truck run for 30 seconds before putting it in gear. I know that if I throw my truck in gear without the 30 second wait, it surges

I can easily hear the RPM and see Tach needle drop after the brief wait. That’s my signal that I’m good to go.

 

You may have a point since fuel trims are adjusted during startup idle. You can audibly hear it. This is important for more reason than one.

 

@OVTune I know you said there will be base tunes available in 2.0 final. I could be wrong, but I recall you saying all of the beta tunes are derivatives of performance tunes with the tip ins adjusted? Do you plan on offering up any of the base tunes in beta if you haven’t already? If not no big deal, we can wait.

 

04A61 2.0 19800 guy here. Can confirm that giving 30+ seconds of idle definitely reduces strength and frequency of surge. 2.0 19800 is less of an issue than the 197xx version.

Not so bad I can’t deal with it. Just have to be careful if close to something.

PS, doesn’t always happen.

 

2019 , 91 2.0 tune, 04b31 , i drive off a few seconds after i start the car. No surge 2-3 weeks and 2 tanks of gas so far

I get the occasional surge from applying steering/brake at idle even when warm but feel that's just a bad idle control scenario on the ECU's part(Not OV related in other words).
However on only a few occasions when extremely rushed over this winter I hopped in and got into gear too quickly(much sooner than my normal routine. I too usually let it run until the idle calms) as soon as I backed out and put it into gear it surged all the way down the road. That was the first instance and in thought immediately that it was related to lack of warm up. The next time was on a morning that was actually below 32° (rare in SoCal desert) and although the idle dropped I ran into the same scenario.
I also believe it to be a matter of the 2 types of fuel injection. I recall reading that until the cats warm up enough the truck is running extremely rich and on direct port injection I beleive? I'm not saying this is OV related either but I think this is what's actually causing most people's surging issues, however there may be more extreme cases and real existing problems. I just wanted to add my 2 cents for what it's worth as it seems I'm not alone on the impression and conclusion I've come to.

 

18 and surge too. Mostly tolerable but do notice it every single day. There have been two times in reverse where I had to shut the truck off to stop it from surging about 500 rpm, but that’s after a couple of months on 19800.

I currently use a laptop that needs 120v to work, and have the accessory handheld that’s not going to be able to be used until 2.0 drops, which will be too late. Who, with a 2018, can log non-stop to capture it?

 

Is there a single tune that isn’t causing our trucks to act up?

 

The posts you see here are the very small minority of trucks we tune. Most people do not have any issues at all.

There are several issues posted here often that are not even tuning related.

A lot of these really common issues, are issues with these trucks in general. You can look on the forum here. Especially this idle surging. Documented, TSB'd by Toyota already.

 

Any update on the map switching for the 2.0?

 

2020 here and have been running the 2.0 Beta for about 1500 miles. No issues whatsoever. Ran the 87 for a tank, then switched to the 92 and kept that tune.

AC on, AC off, Heat On / Off. No surge ever... I let my truck idle for about 15 seconds in the am and even on cold mornings (granted 20* is the lowest here in Alabama since I've had the truck) I've had nothing but smooth running.

Also it doesn't happen all the time, seems like the truck decides on its own when to act up. In a year and a half I had the idle surge thing just a couple of times.

 

I ran 87 base and performance as well as 91 base and performance, and ended up settling with 87 base just because of my driving time, which is very low. I did have this idle surging but never to a point where I thought something was wrong. I just assumed it was because I put the truck in gear while the engine was roaring right after I cranked it up. Easy fix for me, just let it warm up.

It just seems like there is a ton of complaining and worrying about all of the issues that are (aren’t?) being caused by the tune.

I want to run 2.0, but this thread tells me to rethink that want.

 

Just like the other guys with 18s. Mines does as well. Mostly in reverse. Even after a warmup.

 

This is part of what makes it so hard to diagnose what could be going on in the ecu to contribute.


I'll give you another example. When we bought our truck, brand new, the whole truck shaked at idle. Brand new.

Driving it off the lot, 10 miles down the road it was billowing white smoke like a blown engine for a good 10 - 15 seconds.

Only time that's ever happened in the life of the truck, except the shaky idle which I tuned out.

These trucks are amazing but not without some impossible to fix issues. Impossible to fix due to the random-ness of them.

My truck when I bought it, under 100 miles surged idle up and down 500+ rpm right after filling it up the first time. No tune. I distinctly remember this because it was right before the first time off road testing it.


Not that any of this rambling matters...But I just want you guys to know these trucks have some sort of underlying BUGS in the programming or logic that I simply can't find due to how layered everything is.

The ECU has..I can't even recall...16+ or more different idle airflow and throttle delta tables that are used under ABCDEFGHIJLKMNOP conditions.



At least some good news, testing on V...the one guy sorry can't recall username, misfires look to be coming from VVT operation at very low rpm. We are still testing more, but have seen significant changes already.

 

I should caveat this post, in that I don’t think the tune has made this worse from original stock. 1.05 made it better than stock. Original 2.0 had a little bit more, and latest 2.0 a little less.

 

how’s the 4.88 beta for the guys running 5.29s? Is the 5.29 beta circulating around here?

 

It runs great but Is sounds like the 5.29 beta runs a lot better. However it doesn’t seem like a ton that has it is willing to share. I’ve asked and so have several others and doesn’t seem like anyone is sharing it. Bummer because it would be nice to run a tune for the 5.29s while we all wait for the final.
