I was thinking in the vertical smokers it’s that the heat rises and it can get very hot and dry towards the top. Where as the barrel smokers the heat/smoke is a swirled around the chamber giving it less heat at the top. Dunno just a theory.

    None....yet.
It'll be hot for sure. You'll probably want to hit Barton springs... water is always 68-70° and the scenery ain't bad either. For BBQ, I like going to Lockhart where you really can't walk into a bad place. Theres also a shooting range there you can rent a Barrett on the cheap (ammo, not so cheap). Me and a couple buddies have that day whenever possible. Also just a heads up, downtown Austin is going to shit...literally, you'll probably see some. The homeless have protection now to do as they please, and downtown is suffering badly. They also like to stab people lately.

This is exactly the issue with the vertical smokers.. at least the 3 I have.. the Pit Boss pellet get over 100 degrees hotter than the set temp if the water pan isn't inside and full of water .. the heat rises straight up and out the top

Thanks dude, good info. One of the guys lives just down the road in San Antonio and he showed us a place where we could go shoot a tank but I don't think anyone plans to burn 4 digit dollars on 1 round. I have enough guns at home to blow money on ammo for already anyway.

As far as downtown I don't think anything could match Seattle at this point, the homeless here run downtown and have the courthouse scared enough to close entrances. Not to mention the gangbangers that started a gunfight outside a McDonald's few weeks ago, hit 7 people including a kid and killed one guy. I avoid going into the city except for football games and even then I take the train from the end of the line and get back out as fast as I can.

I've never been to Seattle. My old lady lived there for a couple years and I would like to see it. Theres problem areas of just about every city, and austin is still beautiful....mostly. especially if you're into looking at condos.

Yeah it's sad, Seattle used to be a really cool city and there is still a ton of beauty to be seen around the city but a good portion of it has turned into a cesspool of homeless tent camps.

I have been to Austin twice for F1 races back in 2012 and 2013 but we pretty much spent our whole time at the track and sleeping so I didn't see much. I'm looking forward to actually getting to visit the city this time.

I've been in Phoenix area in July. And January and a few other months. We have a hospital and clinics in the Valley and once in awhile have to go there. I see the temps everyday on our intranet home page and 120+ in the summer is not uncommon. Not going to happen if I can help it.

I'm on calls with the people there a couple times a week. They see our temps in the winter and ask us how the hell do we survive. And we ask them how the hell do they survive in the summer. Truth be told a number of the people have lived in both places although as they get older seems like most move from here to there not the other way around.

Ben Avery shooting complex in the NW part of the Valley is one of the best shooting facilities in the County. They just held the World Super Sporting shoot there. I normally take my rental car and run the Apache trail when I am sent there, at one time years ago you had to drive it in a 4x4. Usually get charged an extra $50 cleaning fee for the car when I return it LOL.

Geographically Phoenix is a very large area. I imagine the wives would be more interested in Old Town Scottsdale at least IME. The Pendleton store there is where I first noticed that Pendleton is now made or as they say assembled in Mexico instead of Oregon.

Haven't been back to the PNW since the early 80's. Used to take my FJ55 to Seattle on the ferry once in awhile or sometimes drive around on the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. Joined REI in 81 on one of the trips into Seattle. Never cared much for cities and Seattle was often a freak show, but the freaks were pretty much harmless. Will make it back sometime always considered the PNW the most beautiful place in the world with the best hunting and fishing. But it has changed a lot from what I understand. As has every place in the world.

Around the same time my youngest sister graduated from college as an electrical engineer and went to work for Navy Underwater Systems Command. She spent 2 years in Austin, Tx. doing QA for the Navy on a system that Raytheon was working on. Always tried to get me to go there she said Austin was the most beautiful city she had been in.

I was interested too, until YouTube and Reddit. There are tons of bad things about it on r/pelletgrills. I know that no pellet grill is perfect or a do all machine, but I expected better from a name like Weber.

Speaking of the SmokeFire...saw my first one at Lowe’s this morning. Seems very well built but maybe they need to work some kinks out still

Also, tried my hand at sous vide with a couple of filets. Seared over charcoal using the chimney. Turned out fantastic but miss the smokey flavor of a full cook on charcoal.
