So a few months back I bought a new short block after my 5vz threw a rod.

It was an oem short block and installed at a dealership.

Since then I’ve put about 2k miles. After the 1st oil change I saw a bunch of metal flake and some shavings so I figured I’d keep changing until it cleared up.

So 4 changes later its still the same

Is this normal? sorry no engine replacement experience

    I would say absolutely NO,
HAVE the dealership do the next oil change and show them before the engine goes, something is wrong

Save the used oil filters in case you need proof of unusual wear in the future. Finding metal you can see with the naked eye is not normal.

Break in period can produce very minute amounts of microscopic metal in initial oil change. Finding "shavings and metal flakes" is not a good sign at all. Sorry.

Unless the quality of Toyota Engines has gone really down hill.

Is it a Toyota New Crate Short block or was it sourced else where installed by your Toyota dealer what paper work do you have documenting just what you have??

You bought the Short block and had it installed by your Toyota Dealer pray tell what did that cost and what warranty do you have ??

It almost sounds like the block was not cleaned properly after the machine work .

Are the flakes of block material or bearing material ??

Is it still holding good oil pressure?/

This is going to be interesting Best of Luck

Thanks for your input . It was pricey and came with a 1 year warranty.

It was sold to me as a brand new oem crate short block. I cross referenced other sites with the part number and it seemed legit.

It runs just fine , good power , but my oil is consistently gold glitter. I’m afraid they might try to just flush it really good , but would that cause long term damage ?

If it’s gold flakes that’s brass shaving, possibly bearings, it will fail sooner or later if so, go,talk to warranty asap,
If there are brass flakes in there that will cause damage.

How long ago was it installed?

Of course but if there are metal shavings floating around and new ones showing up after the oil
change it’s only a matter of time before that bearing blows up and then the engine will be worthless.

If you do your part to document what’s going on and they inspect it and see this you will be protected.

If you don’t they will say you over over rpm your motor or something.

    You have to be proactive.

It will blowup sooner or later.

Have the dealership or yourself take an oil same and have it inspected by Black Stone.

This info will be your guarantee to protect yourself.
After the motor Has rested the next day take 6 ounces out from the drain plug.

And send it in and let the dealership know your doing this.

Thanks for your info I ordered my kit today.

I plan to start the process tomorrow on notifying them. I’m sure they’ll drop the oil pan and give a thorough cleaning. What concerns me is the life long reliability of the engine so I plan to pursue new block.

Like most I bought a 1st gen for one it’s my favorite taco and 2nd because 5VZ are know for reliability I’ll update once I hear something

Another thing is I don’t think they replaced the oil pump and pickup. Might be where left over bearing debris stayed trap

Ok, good to hear, I think the front drive axle has to be dropped in order to drop the pan.

It would have been their responsibility to clean the oil pump and filter tho

If a dealer sold him an oe short, I sure hope they didn’t get some crap auto zone block and put in. That’s a lawsuit waiting to happen.

You should have the paperwork detailing just what you paid for .

I can`t think anyone would not install a new oil pump with a new short block unless you the OP declined it trying to save money.

After all this is a brand new bottom end and your installing a oil pump that ate the rod bearing failure ??

Just what head work was done during this adventure ??

I have the receipt showing the Toyota part number.

Makes sense I’ll ask the dealer about the pump installation. If I had more experience I would have verified that initially

head work- they just told me they ran a compression check and it was good.

The oil pump should have been replaced when doing a job like this, so easy to do when the motors apart,
It’s like doing a clutch job and not replacing the throw out bearing to save 50.00
