I was confident it was going to be well over $50.

    Story time:

In the early 2000’s, my first truck was an 88’ Toyota Pickup that I got for $500 because the engine in it was toast (previous owner drove from Flagstaff to Phoenix <2 hours, highway speeds> without an oil cap on the engine and cylinder 4 gave up the ghost on him months later). So I worked overtime shifts and scraped together all the funds I could and had a remanufactured engine installed and *boom* I’ve got an awesome truck that’ll last me, right? ... Except that the rear main seal was leaky from the install, which ruined my clutch. The shop I used had a 1 year warranty on the engine and the work performed to install it, so the rear main seal was covered, but not the clutch that was ruined. It was bullshit, but I had to pony up for the clutch.

So now I need funds for a new clutch, which is going to be about $800, but as a 23 year old trying to make it on my own, I don’t have that kinda money in the bank because I just spent all my money on a new to me engine for a 15 year old vehicle (at the time)... but wait, I’ve got this 2.5 gallon water cooler jug at home that I’ve been trying to fill up with change for about 3 years, lemme count out that change and see how much I’ve got, maybe it’ll soften the blow of this insurmountable expense I’m facing. The jug probably had about 6” of change in it. In the early 2000’s I used cash for most of my transactions (like everyone else, because everywhere didn’t take cards like they do today), so I would never spend my change, it would just go straight to my change jug when I got home.

Well, when I counted out the coins I was quite surprised, nearly $1,000!!! I had enough to cover my new clutch and then some. I went to my bank and found out that I would be charged a percentage to cash more than $100 of change at one time. So since I was cheap (out of necessity), I divided my change up into $95-$99 amounts inside of ten separate, doubled up brown paper lunch bags and proceeded to visit the two branches of my bank on opposite sides of town in my mom’s Ford Aerostar minivan, depositing <$100 at a time. On the third visit to one of the branches, one of the tellers recognized me and asked how much I had total to deposit, I told her I had a little under $300 more to go, so she said that she could deposit the rest without the fee. Good for me, because I hated driving around my mom’s POS minivan (but I’m grateful to be able to borrow it). Once the change was deposited I was able to pay for the new clutch and get my truck fixed & back in my possession.

Since then I’ve tried to fill the 2.5 gallon jug again, but over the years cash payments have made up less and less of my money transactions. But from this whole experience, when I saw that small tub of change I knew it had to be more than $50.
