2003 2WD and only 96,000 miles on it. Gas, oil, brakes and tires only so far. Bought it in 2006 for around $10 grand with 59K on it. Some say it still might be worth around that today. Bought it Certified from a Toyota dealer. Starter motor is acting up.

I changed the air freshener to a new one, one time.

Keep a hammer handy in case it seizes up so you can give it a good pop and hopefully get a few more cranks

If it was 4WD it for sure would be, I don’t know about being 2WD.

Keep the oil changed and the engine tuned up. I have a 2001 with 280,000 miles and runs great. I bought it new.

What exactly is a "tune up" these days? Bought it at 59K in 2006. Now at 96K in 2020. Bought it Certified from a Toyota dealership so they must have went over everything pretty well. So...it's only been about 35K I've put on it during 14 years. Gas mileage is pretty damn good still. Yearly oil changes using synthetic meant to last a year. I'd hate to tweak things (like spark plugs) unnecessarily and see a drop in gas mileage. Just hang tight? No need for preventative maintenance at this point? If any...please suggest so.

Btw, this forum gets a lot more recent posts over that "other" taco site. Glad to be aboard. (bought my first new Tacoma basic back in '85). Prehistoric days almost.

A tune up consists of oil, plugs, air filter and lubricating the drive shafts, coupled with inspection of all vacuum hoses, belts, water hoses and more. You’re stressing your engine by not changing plugs.... I bought my truck new in 2001 and have done all the maintenance myself.

Besides your valve cover gasket, check the seal in the oil cap. They get old and hard from the heat and tend to leak. You can get a new one (seal) at Advance Auto. Insure you torque the valve cover bolts or they will leak.

No valve cover gaskets. I think I'm on my 3rd timing belt (changed all the idlers and water pump on the last one). Regular tune ups and oil changes. At 200k things like door handles in/out started to break, starter went out, alternator went out. Blew a seal on rack and pinion, replaced the whole thing, did LC bushing at the same time, that was probably 280k. New shocks somewhere in there also along with a rear axle seal. Other than a couple of coil packs and a MAF brake shoes/pads, that's all I can think of. I do have a list of things that need to be done but for the most part trucks runs great.

A6B4E7BD-7A23-4396-AA78-998BB06FFFA6.jpg I’ve got about 142,000 on my 2003 Tacoma. Just had to replace Timing belt and O2 sensor; decided to plasti dip the bumpers and fenders and repaint the hood. Clearly not the best but allows me to save for a better makeover this summer.

I just hit 103k on mine. I bought it last July with just under 96k. It's been my daily ever since.
