What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

I have one. I don't trust that the Scangauge is showing the correct temperature and it's not an official supported feature and people "figured" out the settings and math equation.
Also, the times I see these higher temps are sustained grades on the highways when the truck is struggling to keep speed and running the torque converter unlocked. So I manually turn off and on the overdrive very frequently.

 

Autos don't like heat, and there are some activities that generate quite a bit of it. At a previous job we had a bunch of gm 2500 suburbans and pickups. The suburbans were all 4l80e autos, the pickups were all 5 speed nv4500 manuals. 85% of their miles were in the mountains, on dirt roads, at about 15 mph. The autos would regularly be roasted at 40,000 mi, but we never had issues with the manuals.

Moral of the story: it depends. I'm pretty sure slipping the torque converter a lot is no bueno though

Same here. (except I'm using the Torque Pro app)

I do have a thermostat controlled trans cooler. The cooler fans kick on at 180°. The temp shown on my Torque app is normally pretty close to 180° when I hear the fans kick on.

I wish there was a way (or I had the patients to find a way) to rig the overdrive to stay off unless I turn it on, instead of staying on until I turn it off.

 

yeah I've been on more than a few trail runs with heavily armored and loaded up 2nd gens w/autos and have had to stop along a climb because someone's AT Temp light came on and they needed to cool down. We don't even have a temp light for the manual transmissions. Just keep it in 1st gear/4lo for 95% of the climb and you don't even need to worry about touching the clutch unless you come up on a bigger obstacle.

 

I swear I have seen somewhere that somebody just smashed/squeezed the square metal box section down to make the opening that the nylon bar passes through smaller

 

I’m working on it. Also, a manual switch to keep the torque converter locked if I want to - this will also be helpful when the supercharger goes on.

 

Well what type of trans cooler do you have?

I have the stacked plate type... those do a lot more vs the type that's just a tube that snakes around with some fins around it

 

I’ve torn them apart before, people lose fingers trying to remove the magnets..
The magnets are stupid strong. I have one on an stick for picking up metal on the fmoor

 

If the autos would put it in 4 low/ 2nd they wouldn’t have a problem.

I had my light come on twice before some told me what I was doing wrong

 

I havnt seen that light on either of my trucks... and thats because i was towing a 2wd through sand with my foot to the floor

Doing that got the trans tunnel got pretty hot... thats what made me get a trans cooler

 

You have 100% got to do a write up that shit!

all you need to do is press the button on the shifter unless you just dont like the light on the dash

 

They're totally badass for hitting the power to efficiency curve because they lock the engine in the power band during acceleration. But unfortunately the design hinges on pushing (not pulling) a metal band between cone shaped pulleys (very similar to a snow machine trans) and they cannot handle much torque as a result, and they torque they do handle seems to be a tenuous arrangement, as failure rates if CVTs vs conventional autos are much higher. Some people just dislike them because it makes the engine sound as if the trans is slipping (but it isn't, it's just varying ratios to keep the RPM in the power band as speed increases), and others don't like that they can't feel shifts. The tried to make it so you feel shifts with the CVTs on Nissans and the life went down more because it made them jump ratios and wear the band. I think CVTs are really cool, at least in concept, who doesn't want a trans that makes super efficient use of all their power on the fly? But until they're reliable and can handle power they're useless to me.

 

I see people post numbers like that and I'm sorry, I don't believe it. Not saying you are lying, I'm saying I question the accuracy of the numbers you're getting.

You can kill power to the solenoid, it might throw a code but with a resistive bypass load on the other pole of your switch you can defeat that. It's not hard, these transmissions are stupid simple on the electrical side

 

I don't like the fact that I always have to remember to push the button.

I would drive 80-90% of the time without the OD on... which means every damn time I get in the truck, I have to push that button.
