Wow this is down right spooky !

As all dealers are independent who can say maybe they are just this sloppy .

You have no computer printed work order detailing just what work is to be done that you signed ??

Almost sounds like this job was done under the table with very little paper trail.

The fact alone the heads were not cleaned to remove the metal from the spun rod !!

Did the rod break through the side of the block??.

I wish you the best of luck !!

@rickyg2008, you waited until 2,000 miles to do your first oil and filter change on this engine? Is that what the mechanic said to do?

When I built an engine for my old truck I was able to score a factory 22R-E short block for a reasonable price. Unless Toyota's distribution had counterfeit parts I know mine was genuine. I put a Topline head on it, also a brand new casting.

Finding metal shaving isn't unusual in a newly built engine. The short block was machined but being an incomplete assembly it has never been filled or run, so there's going to be left over machining debris and the engine still need to break in, like the rings set to the cylinders.

I did my initial run with the engine in my truck but it was a 30 minutes run at which point I did an oil and filter change. The filter was full of shavings, there wasn't that much in the oil coming from the drain plug, though there was some.

After that I did I think 500 miles of intentional break-in driving, then another oil and filter change, 2,500 miles of normal but careful driving and another oil and filter change. There was a little bit of shavings in the filter at 500 miles but by 3,000 miles the oil and filter were normal and I was able to get meaningful used oil analysis that weren't spiked from the debris.

My guess would be that by driving that long with the filter clogged and bypassed shavings circulated well through the engine.

@DaveInDenver I was not given direction on oil changes. But I did some research and I made my own break in procedure. Dealer put in conventional. I changed at 50 miles. 2nd oil change conventional at 300 miles. 3rd oil change synthetic changed at 500 miles. I figured changing as much as possible wouldn’t hurt and prevent bypass.

Re verified today the block did come from Toyota. They agreed not normal and will screen the oil and go from there.

Oil pump was not changed but mechanic gave good explanation. All left over debri would have been caught by the filter and lifting tube has a suction screen

When you say a change I assume you mean oil and filter. Cutting open the filters might tell you something, too. It sounds like you're seeing all this debris in the drained oil and not from opening filters, too.

I would have personally run conventional longer than 500 miles but I'm not experienced enough to say the right approach to that. I actually never switched that rebuilt engine over to synthetic and it had about 125K on it when I sold it. I did that first run on a 30 weight break-in oil and ran Castrol GTX in it from then on and put 2 ounces of zinc additive each oil change.

It's one thing to have metal shavings in there another thing to have brass metal shavings from a bearing I would believe

You have a magnetic oil pan drain bolt?,
It's not you should get one ASAP
