There has been previous discussion regarding CPLAY2air specifically as well as similar android-to-carplay boxes. There are more negative posts than positive. HOWEVER, in unfounded optimism, I ordered a CPLAY2air unit and it's due today. I'll be happy to report back in this thread my results.

Mine was garbage and they wouldn’t email me back until I filed a claim on my credit card. I just let the claim go through cause they wanted me to ship it back on my dime even though it was defective. It was like $40 to ship it back.

I am interested as well. Was thinking about this for an Alpine that I have in another vehicle but if it really does work in the Taco so much the better.

Checking my junkman folder and found a note from CPLAY2air
"...but as you may already know, the Coronavirus has paralyzed half of the world freight services..."

Ah, it appears my order has been... delayed. I have a tracking number that basically says it's somewhere between the factory and the consumer. So, we wait. I will keep you all posted.

I have been using this one since last summer. The key is to have an android based head unit, that will allow you to load the necessary APK files to make it work.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JGVFTW5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    I used this head unit.

Tech support on both the head unit and the dongle have been excellent. I have had no issues with either unit as I transitioned firmware upgrades on my iPhone 11pro max. The trick is to check your firmware on both head unit and dongle from the head units interface for the latest upgrades.

Not to be a smart-ass, but if you have to replace the head unit to get Android, why not just buy one that already supports wireless Android Auto instead of mucking around with a third party adapter?

There is a lot to be said about not having to pull out the phone, hook it up to a cable every time you want music, maps, web searches, restaurants, movies.......just say "hey siri" and your in business, just as if you had your phone in your hand.

I looked at solutions from Alpine and Pioneer, with built in wireless carplay. Besides the fact that they looked aftermarket, they were also twice as expensive. My carplay dongle sits under the dash; it's out of sight and functions flawlessly. Everything in this setup was plug and play. No splicing. I bought two extra items to save a couple of factory connections: GPS antenna connector and microphone to install in the location of the original factory mic.

That 10” screen is gorgeous. I’m all for connectability, but completely distracted by the pretty colors.

I really struggled finding a CarPlay replacement for my son’s Prius w/ JBL. Don’t want to go through that mess with my Taco.

This is the absolute worse scam out there. It doesn’t work as advertised. It might connect but you won’t get a display. Even more of a nightmare to return. The company is in China so cost a fortune to ship back. They don’t pay for return shipping. You have been warned

    So my package arrived today.

I though I was buying a box that would give my CarPlay-less Headunit a CarPlay "experience" via the USB input. I was wrong. The subtitle to the manual reads "Car OEM Wired CarPlay to Wireless CarPlay

So, I emailed CARPLAY2air asking for a return or replacement for the item I thought I ordered.
Am I crazy to think I was ordering a box that gave my OEM head unit a CarPlay input?

update it when the screen is black through your connected phone.

go to 192.168.50.2 on the phone connected to the unit, hit update, and then after it updates, reconnect and it will work.

Yes, it clearly says you need to have a CarPlay system to use this. This is for turning wired CarPlay into wireless CarPlay, not giving you CarPlay on a non CarPlay system.

direct quote from the product page “Convert your factory CarPlay to wireless and skip plugging in your phone when you get in!”

I would try selling it elsewhere though, as they are gonna charge you a $25 restocking fee and make you pay the $30+ shipping to mail it back. That or file a claim against them through your card if you believe it was inaccurately listed.
