295/75/16 Mistake - Changed to 285/75/16 MUCH BETTER!

Your truck looks like a new 3rd gen it’s so clean! You took good care of her! This hesitation on take offs is killing me! The ZR2 and Z71 are rockets compared to my Pro. I gotta find a fix......... the pedal commander just makes them touchy and doesn’t fix the pulsating take offs. The Raptor..... I hate it! Wife thinks I’m nuts but I love my TRD most!

 

Yeah I wish Toyota’s had more get up and go. But it is what it is. I love them still lol. I haven’t driven a new auto yet, but that would kill me too. That’s why I love my manual. Another awesome truck option to build is the older tundras. They have a v8 and are not to huge on the trail. I always want a new 4Runner when I see them to. I hope manuals don’t die

 

Are you running the stock gears?

 

Ya, stock but the gearing isn’t the hesitation problem. It’s almost like the damn thing is getting too much fuel and dogs down. Reminds me of the carborator days and you just dumped too much fuel in the mixture. Lots of people talk about the problem, Toyota service techs know about it and get complaints on it all the time, well Toyota, FIX IT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! You should be kicking the shit out of my Colorado’s and putting the ZR2 to pasture. Instead, you’re letting the ZR2 feel like a rabbit! Strangely enough, the 4.0L in the 4-Runner doesn’t do this. But everyone I know complains about this hesitation thing.

 

I wonder why they didn’t put the 4Runner 4L in the taco.

For me I see the problem as a mismatched engine/transmission issue, it’ll shift all over 4-5-6 on the slightest grades. At this point the only fix is re-gear but that’s a lot of loot for an annoyance.

It’s funny because my work truck went from a 2011 ram 1500 hemi 6spd to a 2017 8spd and the 8 makes a huge difference.

 

Did you get it powdercoated, arrive ok?

Yes, the shifting drives me nuts! I love my F250 Diesel as it just climbs like there is no tomorrow, but I just love this snorkel! Changing from 295's to 285's and pumping in high octane actually made a difference. I can't believe that little bit helped, but running at fwy speeds of 85+ up hills really helped a bunch. ECT is also key to this snorkel not to mention I pull it into a lower gear manually and keep it in the power band a little more now. Still fun truck to play with!

 

I've been wanting to get 285/75/16 in KO2s as well, but everyone tells me not so since they are grade E in that size only and really slow these trucks down and rob MPG a lot. How has your experience been with them so far?

 

I posted a bunch of stuff on this topic and photos that I guess guys all have bad opinions on. Got BASHED for many of my opinions, but here you go...... so I went from stock 265's to 295's because they messed up and put the wrong size on my truck. I HATED the 295's and even with a 1/2" spacer up front and 1" add a leaf in rear, it was just not working out like I wanted. The extra weight was REALLY noticeable at fwy speeds. This 2020 TRD Pro has the new factory wheels that are 4.188 lbs lighter EACH rim from the stock 2019's so I really wanted to stay with the stock 16" (And they look good in my opinion) I lost A LOT of milage on the fwy with the 295's and I just dropped to 285's and I'm really happy. Below are some photos for you. The top one with no mud flap is the 295 that still hit when going in reverse. The one below that is the 285 that I was able to put the flaps back on, no rubbing. This is how the truck sits now and I'm pretty happy. Yes, you will lose some milage but it's worth it. I can tell you that running as hard as I do on the fwy, I gained 1mpg moving to 285's from the 295's. Going from my stock 265's to the 285's..... lets just say you will be paying for your look my friend...... is it worth it? That is up to you. Remember, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and they all stink. Find one that you can tolerate and seems to be the best for what you are doing.

 

Perfect thank you so much! I'm really contemplating on what I want to do haha. I love the look of the KO2s in 285/75/16 but really don't want my truck's 0-60 be like 20 seconds lol. I guess I'll just have to figure out what works best for me like you said. I've also been eyeing the KO2s in 275/70/16, but they are still a D grade tire so.. not sure haha.

 

For whatever it's worth, I tried the 275 on there just to mount up and look at, na....... 285 is the way to go. There is something about the way the 275's looked that made it appear so much more narrow on the truck. When i had the 285 and 295 on there, one set on each side, the 285's were an easy choice to take the $600 trade in hit and go with those.... Don't stress on this D grade thing so many are putting their 2 cents in on. If you end up going 285's you will thank me later. My buddy just ordered the 2020 Pro rims and has the 285's ready to mount up when they arrive. He had the 17" 4-Runner Pro wheels on there like so many others have with 285's on there. I was going to go that route until Toyota did this new rim at 16" The rid is soooo different and better with the new 16" I can't explain it, you have to go drive it and see what I mean. It's such a stupid difference, I would've never known had I not been able to play around with these like I did AND have my buddy with his 4-runner rims installed on his 2019 Tacoma Pro. Post some picks if you do it, would love to see how it turns out for ya!

 

No cutting for front on the second gens. You have to cut the rear high clearance flush with the tail lights. 3 gen you have to cut the plastic bumper I believe.

 

Hey, I was wondering what your offset was with the 295 before the spacer? Did they use the spacer because it's backspacing wasn't going to work? I have been thinking of the 295s but I have a 3 inch suspension lift with after market UCAs, CMC and am getting a regear to 5.29. I don't seem to find many 295 on stock wheels.

 

you’ll need spacers for sure with stock wheels. The stock wheels are a little narrow but should mount. 17x9 -12. No spacers. I’m now running 35x12.5 with spacers
