I might have quoted the wrong post. EatSleepTaco was talking about about open ended lugnuts. I don't know that those dormans specifically are. Good looking out.

That’s pretty cool. I’m not familiar with your truck. Are you still going street drive it with the ram? It will be great on the trail but no mechanical connection will be a little sketchy on public roads

Yea I still plan on driving it on the street. I have adjustable upper control arms so I will be running 7 or 8* of caster and I have the return to center orbital valve so it will allow the tires to push the ram back to center. I know it wont drive great on the road but it should drive decent. I'll also have a couple field repair kits as well just in case.

I’d be concerned about losing a line or pump, and losing all steering control

In a properly built full hydraulic system when a motor dies or line blows you can generally steer enough to get off the road.
Proof? It's common belief but not written in many states as a lot of heavy equipment utilizes hydraulic steering and drives on the road. Some haul trucks, cranes, street sweepers, and more

Full hydraulic general speaking it’s a no go, you’re referencing hydraulic assist.
The legality is open to interpretation though, most states say the steering system must be able to operate without engine power.

full hydraulic = lose your steering pump little to no turning
Hydraulic assist = lose your steering pump your still able to turn the wheel

What was I referencing hydro assist to? The link I sent talks about full hydro. Tn is the only state that it's illegal in that I know of. Also there are a lot of vehicles on the road that use full hydraulic steering systems.

Yes it's open to interpretation and im ok with that, but what makes you say full hydro is a no go?

It's actually fed law so states don't have to necessarily reiterate what the feds already req. for having a road legal vehicle, kinda like emissions stuff even in states that don't req inspections it's still supposed to stay on the vehicle. Now as far as your heavy equipment on the road like tractors and such they aren't licensed and insured like a motor vehicle and fall into a different category and are allowed on roadways for getting to and from areas for work etc (easement rights, state dependent for where). I'll have to see if I can dig it up but I'm pretty sure NC mentions having a mechanical link between the wheel and steering system.

All that being said is good luck running into a cop or inspection station that knows what they are looking at to ticket you or whatever. Also if it blows and it causes an accident then I highly doubt anything legal would happen unless the person decided to go after civilly. It's your truck, I support it and want some feedback when you are done and it's running again.

I know a few people that have/had full hydro with 40+" tires it's not the most fun but definitely doable. They drove/drive theirs all over to wheel and stuff. I'd go for it personally on a non DD vehicle.

95% of the suspension mods done to our trucks would be illegal if you read the fed DOT standards.

@ovrlndkull How is full hydro different than the electric power steering in my camry, zero mechanical connection to the rack.

It is only driven to offroad events and spontaneously to the dairy queen for ice cream! So I appreciate the concern. The full hydro test vehicle has been going strong for a year now and runs down the road pretty good. As for if a cop wants to pull me over full hydro will be one of many ticketable things on my truck haha. Beadlocks, tires sticking out, beadlocks, rear bumper, license plate isn't illuminated, tinted windows, grooved tires, and I'm sure more lol but it's all in the name of fun.

But as for progress on the hydro swap the mount is finished and welded in, pump is mounted, the reservoir is mounted, and tonight I mount the orbital valve.

Dont worry about the dirty engine. That was from the rack dying and pouring at 4 or 5 quarts of ps fluid on my way home from the last offroad trip Haha. It will get cleaned up.

I was being facetious about the cop giving you a ticket hell even for the beadlocks they don't know really.

Y'all have tire sticking out laws that sucks.

I still would like to figure out an assist system using a tundra rack.

Ky doesn't state it but it talks about tire coverage. And I tried looking into that and never found a way to make it work. Closes I got was still full hydro using a single sided ram and 2 pillow blocks but couldn't figure out mechanical steering so I said hell with and and full send on a double ended ram

The sprint cars and other dirt track racing stuff use a rack with hydro assist. That's what I found and would like to try and emulate just in larger scale. The biggest unknown to me is if the Tundra rack could handle it. That's a lot of $$$$$ for failure on something completely custom.

NC doesn't care one bit about tire coverage whatsoever.
