I think it was in drive when that happened. Gears spinning forward and when it got to 6 or 7 o'clock the piece was ejected through the axle.

If we had some engineers in here we could estimate the speed at which the piece was moving in order to rip through the diff. Then you could determine if they were indeed flooring it. I'd imagine the RPMs inside the diff had to of been substantial for that to happen.

Probably a hard reverse into a full spin forward that fractured on the back stroke and grenaded on the forward push.

    Speed of the piece?
    Speed of the ring gear?
    Speed of the tire?

In this case it is impossible to tell with any certainty. Why? It's very probable that the tooth was fractured earlier by repeated impact of switching direction. If this was the case (probable) then the speed would be much less.
You also cannot tell the speed just because it punched through the housing. That depends on the.frontal area of the tooth on impact. If the.pointy end hit first then it would require much less velocity to penetrate.

I will go with hella fast also. Final answer.

I originally had a 2016 Tacoma and the rear end blew out just driving normally down the road at around 17,000 miles....looked just like that.

Eventually I had that vehicle lemon lawed and they got me a 2018 straight off the line... And now today, the 2018 just had it's rear end blow out the same way when leaving the parking lot.

Clearly there is something wrong with these things. They put me in a rental and will be replacing it. Now I just must decide if I should trade it in for something else. This can't be happening again outside the warranty window because I'm sure it wouldn't be covered then... In now way shape or form was there any negligence on my part it just happens to blow out of nowhere... I can't be the only one, wtf...

Gotta be honest, sounds like user error.

Maybe I'm too rough on these trucks, or they're just weak pos's... Dealership is gonna cover the replacement again and I'll just have to trade it in for that Tundra TRD Pro

What exactly do you mean by 'blow out'. Is it eating the gears or blowing axle seals?

My apologies, guess I could have elaborated. Something from the inside bursts out creating about a half inch hole. In this case a rod of some sort was poking out the hole and fluid was beginning to leak out. Unfortunately I didn't take a picture, but it looks similar to this.

Can you get it replaced with the 8.75 inch rear?

The odds of you blowing up two differentials and it not having anything to do with how you drive gotta be extremely low. Just because it blew up under normal driving doesn't mean it wasn't weakened earlier.

Are you turning in 4wd a lot? The sport has an LSD that can bind up the rear. Which would probably lead to weakening of the gears and eventual boom sometime down the road. I'm wondering if the 'rod' you saw was a tooth off the ring gear.

Yeah it seems unlikely that I would get two messed up differentials. Must be my rough driving. ‍♂️

Seems the same thing as OP just my wheels weren't spinning.

What’s the male symbol supposed to mean? I don’t want to jump to conclusions but I would interpret it as “dick.” Which would be a bit much for someone disagreeing and drawing their own conclusions.

I don't constantly press the ECT button and gun it every chance I get if that's what you're getting at. :crapstorm:

How many miles are you putting on the truck before the failure roughly?
