    A couple questions please:

Do I really need the installation tool or can I use a socket or something?

Do I need an alignment after I install the new bushing?

    Thanks in advance!

When I do mine, I plan on using a socket. Alignment shouldn't be necessary

Anybody have the unfortunate luck of dropping the back piece of the ECGS tool into your diff? If so, how did you get it out?

I did, it was not fun. You have to fish it out. Take off the drain plug, drain all fluid, get the piece visible in the drain hole, fish a piece of line down and through the cv hole, then tie onto the piece then pull it back through the top

**So I still had the drain plug off and I could see the back part of the tool. I was able to fish a piece of coated tie wire in through the drain plug hole, through the tool and up out of the CV hole. I bent a hook on the end and I was able to pull the tool through. It was actually pretty quick and easy. After I removed it, I used a bench grinder and tapered the back side of the tool as others have suggested, that made it work much easier.

i do not deny the results that people have reported, but is anyone else surprised that a bushing works better than a needle bearing in this application? It seems like a low load high velocity situation where I needle bearing would be a better choice than a bushing. Maybe I am missing something.

There is actually a needle bearing on both sides of the differential, it's just that on the LH side the CV rides on it while on the RH side the intermediate shaft between the differential and the ADD actuator rides on that needle bearing. The needle bearing allows the LH axle (and RH intermediate shaft) to spin inside the (mostly) stationary differential housing while the ADD is disconnected.

There is definitely a space issue which is why a needle bearing (or a bushing) is used. The ball bearing is used at the end of the LH tube as it needs to support both radial and axial loads. As for why Toyota decided to use the needle bearing instead of going with a bushing, I can only imagine they thought it would be better in stock conditions. They might have been wrong, but they do seem to be sticking to their guns on this, haha. Interesting fact is that the TRD Pro actually uses different internals on the front diff, but still uses the same needle bearings.

The installation is identical to doing the needle bearing and so any shop or dealership that would be able to replace the stock bearing can easily do the ECGS bushing.

The TRD Pro uses different internals??? Proof? More info??

the needle bearing isn’t the problem, this is exactly where you’d normally want to use one, the crappy cast carrier is the real problem. ECGS made a video about this for y’all to see. The splined end of the CV goes into the driver side spider gear which doesn’t sit tight in a machined surface but in a sloppy cast. That is the real problem and gets amplified when lifted. The ECGS bushing therefore is a bandaid albeit a very good one. I wonder if Toyota has a better carrier in higher end SUV like their similar Lexus models?? And did they sneak that into the TRD Pro?
