Ahhh.. that makes more sense. I was wondering if you meant rotate. I could get behind that then, especially if it already happens after driving a bit.

Before retiring outright, I worked for Directv for a few years. It was the same. One bad survey could tank you. Those only effected the tech and their direct supervisor though, not anyone outside of who was responsible for the actual work.

Brother, I’m going to commend you for being honest.
I know where you’re coming from, as most people are likely going to “find a cheaper or DIY”.
So, Yes. You gain nothing from the inspection.
But, some people would never know unless you informed them.
I hesitate to say it, but most women likely wouldn’t what to look for.
And their husband probably isn’t looking for them.

Oh, and I specially ask not to have my cabin filter inspected.
That way me and the tech don’t have hard feeling, trying to work that puzzle getting all my stuff back in there. LOL

It’s not an hourly gig? Based on jobs done or % of cost? Curious how this works.

Based off book times and how fast or slow you get it done. Google flat rate.

That's why I said I glance at certain stuff. It's easy enough to scope stuff out when the wheel is off. But I'm not going to check ball joint deflection or anything like that lol

I usually have a list of things I don’t want fixed.
I tell the advisor when I hand him my keys.
That pretty much takes care “sell” for me.

I would say more men do know what to look for compared to women BUT, this day and age, I would say most MEN and WOMEN don’t know what to look for. Hell I’ve rebuilt engines, automatic and manual transmissions, carbs, breaks, starters and I still wouldn’t know half the stuff on a newer vehicle.

That's how it should be. I hate trying to upsell shit, unless they specifically ask for it be looked over.

Got ya. The days before AT&T, directv was similar. Install faster then the “estimated” time, you still got the full rate. Nightmare job that takes twice as long, you’re basically making half pay. You don’t make shit the first few months, but once you learn, it wasn’t bad. Similar but likely different.

Flat rate. Automotive is different than what I do, but let's say flat rate for a carb cleaning is 1 hour per carb. An old carb outboard 3 cylinder engine has 3 carbs. I have to pull all 3 carbs anyway, and it really takes about 15 to 20 minutes to clean, rebuild, and set the float on each. So 60 minutes plus about 10 minutes pulling and replacing carb set on engine. I just got paid 180 minutes to do a 70 minute job.
I can move on to the next job and start making money on it, when according to flat rate I should still be on the first repair order.
You can also lose your ass when something does not go right, so its not all fun and games.

You would love to see a diagnostics session on newer commercial vehicles. First step, hook up laptop, connect to device with issue, upload image, forward image to manufacturer, follow troubleshooting tree for defect. Replace or repair part that is an issue. Clear code ( OBD now standard on Commercial Vehicles and if the code is not cleared the CEL stays on for 3 full key cycles, the operator just sends the vehicle back for repair. ) Everything is now electronic. The hybrid stuff I work on is crazy, 3 major LAN networks and 3 minor networks at 4 different baud rates and connector interfaces.

To think there was a time in this country when a gas station owner would pump your gas and top off your washer fluid out his own (business’) pocket. Didn’t need a survey to get return business.

Had a lot of service experience with my Chevy. Could never fault the poor working guy. I get they have pressure- everyone does this day in age. But they’re working to make it right with limited resources.

The problem is every business stopped caring about people- the ones they pay and the ones that pay them. Instead it’s about the business.

They can't even put lug nuts on right without fucking them up. Their parts department has very fair pricing though.

The problem is twofold really. Businesses are on a never ending quest to squeeze as much profit as they can out of customers, and customers over the years, perhaps inadvertently, have accepted less and less quality in return for their money.

The crux of the issue is impatience. Customers want what they want now -- not a week from now, not a month from now, they want it now -- and are willing to settle for less to get it. Businesses, of course, have capitalized on this weakness... give buyers 95% of what they want, but charge more for it, and market it in a way that makes it irresistible. And do this again in the next iteration of the product.
