Well, the order has been placed to join the 5.29 club!! After several 6hr trips last year on I-70 through KS listening to my transmission try and figure what gear it wants to be in made the decision pretty easy.

I have about 350 pounds of armor and 33s and installed 5.29s few weeks ago. After about 800 miles it’s safe to say I am very satisfied with how the truck drives. I was hesitant to go with these vs. 4.88s but I definitely think I made the right decision. If anyone in the Denver area is looking for a shop to install gears, I highly recommend TRU Automotive.

RSG actually used to me my go to shop since I live about 5 minutes from them but after trying out TRU i doubt I’ll go back to RSG. They are located in Englewood so a bit further from you, but they are very knowledgeable guys who do great work and don’t charge an arm and a leg to get it done. I heard a drivetrain tech from RSG actually just moved over to TRU too so they definitely have a lot of experience with gears. They are an authorized dealer for nitro and are currently running a special on gears so it’s about $2700 out the door.

Hey so I’ve got a couple questions for yall.

    1) What was the out the door cost your to regear (parts and labor)?
    2) What size tires are you running?
    3) What is the top speed you can comfortable travel after regearing?

I want to run 285’s but i dont want to turn my truck into a turd going up these steep New Mexico hills on the interstates.

After doing a bunch of research, I'm going to schedule mine with Rear End Specialties in Santa Clara.

Drain plug after 500 mile break-in period. The fluid was still very good and had a slight brown tint but was pretty clear. Is this odd?

Can you talk a little bit about the improvements you've noticed especially as someone running these gears with 33's?
I'm in a similar situation myself, running 33's and about 1000 lbs extra gear. Soon to be getting my gears installed.

Sure thing. The throttle response is the biggest thing I’ve noticed. The truck changes gears much more often now and stays in the ideal rpm range a lot longer than before. The truck also now stays in one gear going over passes in the mountains instead of jumping constantly between two or three. Crawling in 4lo feels twice as slow as before, which is great when going traversing steep trails. Only negative thing I have noticed so far is the drop in gas mileage. Currently I’m averaging about 16 mpg whereas before I was at about 17.5. Well worth it though in my honest opinion!

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Good to go. Clean install ;)

Mine was 3400 out the door cost here in Colorado.
    I am running 32.7 275/70/17 BFG KO2 E rating
70mph i am doing about around 2500 RPM and truck holds 5th or 6th gear no issue, i havent pushed further due to break in. i know in past i would be in 4th gear screaming close to 3800 RPM or higher, truck holds hills much better some small hills it will stay in gear it is in or go from 6th to 5th in past it would jump to 4th and stay there constant.

odd thing was to get used to idea that truck has 6th gears not 4, in past i would sit in truck and go manual /sport and switch to 4th and basicly never give truck option to go to 5th as i know it would not hold it, now i have to keep training myself to keep the shifter in D and let truck do it thing.

    over all best mod.
