Anyone paying close attention to fuel efficiency and cruise control will notice the hunting.

I live at nearly sea level so altitude has nothing to do with it. Just tune your truck and you’ll be good to go. Check my profile for a new tune that’s about to hit the market.

As others have said, the factory tune is for fuel efficiency so all the torque is on the top end.

I haven’t had any issues with gear hunting. It typically holds gear on the freeway.

however, I hate when I need to accelerate and the truck drops gear but there’s a lag and when it does drop gear the truck jolts. Anyone else get this? Any fixes? OVTune?

Depending on how the results come out, I was thinking on doing a second round. If there is a second round, I'll be sure to add this in.

There is always going to be the group of people who want nothing but performance in their tune. With each driver having different expectations than the next, I'm interested to know if external factors like altitude or larger tire increase the proportion of people who perceive/have gear hunting issues.

Mine dragged just as bad before I went with bigger tires and added a large amount of weight as it did after I added all of that. The best part of the tune is that it corrected the horrible shift points which drastically improved the drive ability.

I have a 2019 off road 4x4 with king suspension and 33” tires. Gear hunting was horrible stock, after upgrading suspension was the same. So I decided to upgrade the gear differentials to 5.29 Nitro gears. Now I virtually have no gear hunting at all!

I downsized from 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel to the Tacoma after I downsized from a 2800 pound boat/trailer combo to a smaller boat/trailer combo that weighs less than 1000 pounds. Grandson got the Dodge for his graduation. The hunting in the Tacoma is most noticeable for me when towing a light <1,000lb) boat trailer uphill or with any headwinds doing about 65-70. Occasionally I've caught it downshifting 2 gears then up 2 gears, then back down 2 gears, then back up 2 gears again all with a 7 seconds span. Lately I have been anticipating when this might happen and utilizing the sports mode on the long hills. I've just let it rev slightly higher in 5th gear and that seems to have helped a bit. Also the Tacoma had 265/70/17 wheels (Bigger than the diesel had. lol). I downsized to 245/75R16 wheels and it seems to be in a better rpm range but the real test will come when I have the boat trailer out again.
As a side note, 14 of my last vehicles have been manual transmissions. So I am regretting not holding out longer for a manual transmission.

Funny how it always follows AT guys bitching about their shitty transmission. You think youre sick of hearing about MT, theyre even sicker of hearing you cry about gear hunting:luvya:

    I have a 4.88 tyvm

Sorry if posted already: I recently replaced the stock tires with 33s and first thing I noticed was the change in how the transmission was operating. It wanted to stay in 4th and 5th gears and hardly ever going to 6th. There was some lag issues as well. Gas mileage went down (I know the revolutions per mile changes the MPH and MPG) but since trying to stay in lower gears the mileage went down even though the weight difference in tires and wheels only changed slightly.
I started to think that the transmission was "calibrated" to the old set up, so when I went for an oil change I asked the service tech about any TSBs or other things I could do. He suggested to reset the tranny's learning memory and this will start the process all over. I did and it cost about $100.
This has made a big difference, shifts through the gears and goes to 6th without going downhill and taking my foot off the pedal. Its still in the learning stage but have seen the mileage jump back up as well. Mind that I do not have any additional weight to speak of, so this may not make a big difference with those that do.

Just thought I would share my experience.

Why did you pay for a TSB? Gear hunting on the highway is brutal in these trucks, around town is fine since its 1-4. 5/6 are OD gears and are useless. But every time I get off a highway I hope someone T bones me and I don't have to drive the screaming schizophrenic taco anymore. 4-5-6-5-4-5-4-5-6. Honestly feels like an old CVT with all the hunting. We have 2 four cyl cars that shift less on the highway than this truck does
