called a local driveshaft shop to get a quote for fixing the stripped threads and the guy said it wasn't something he could fix and would probably have to replace that part of the driveshaft if not upsell me to a one piece. I asked if he could ballpark what those would cost and he went on a rant

"I know what you're doing, you're just calling around to see who will do it the cheapest. I don't play that game. I do the best work and I'm not gonna be the cheapest so you should be calling someone else or bring it in if you want an actual quote because I can't do it over the phone"

me: dude, I am coming from 60 miles away, I wanted to call and see if it was even something you could do before I brought it in for an accurate quote

him: ... ok... well bring it on by then

 

What threads are stripped? Not on the Tacoma Id guess?

 

The threads that hold the yoke after the carrier bearing on. I did not stake the nut after changing the carrier bearing

Interested in the one piece cost, kinda sick of carrier bearing shit.

 

I was quoted $500 "worst case" over the phone for it. Potentially less

 

my concern with the one piece would be smashing it on the rocks and having interference issues with my belly skid

 

Check with Speedytech7 if that's the kind of thing a regular machine shop could handle, I'm thinking it is. At least thinking back to the shop I worked in 10 years ago, it should be.
You're wanting to repair the stripped threads on the end that the stake nut goes into? Yeah, plus old machine shop guys are usually cool and see the value in repairing when possible over replacing.

that’s really not bad considering you’ll spend more than that when the double whatever goes out.
I’ll have to see what the shop in Vernal would do it for. Im not really worried about less clearance or any of that.

Why dont you just buy a used "front" rear driveshaft section from someone parting out a truck? Post a pic of how boogered up the threads are. When I damaged mine, I just cut the end off the threads. The top of the nut just barely overhangs the threaded rod.

I have a spare shaft with a seized carrier bearing stuck to it, I can cut the end off and ship it to you if you are interested. That way you just need a driveline shop to cut you old end off and weld this one on.

 

None of the TW part outs have a driveshaft last time I asked. I was quoted $200 locally for it.

I'll take a pic when I pull it, which I need to stop procrastinating. Truck is buried in snow but it's a whopping 6 bolts so I can suck it up and crawl under there

 

honestly I can probably zip those threads off, coat the rest in red loctite, remember to stake the nut, and live my life in peace

Just looked at my spare shaft and the threads are mushroomed anyway.

 

I'm going to make a plate skid soon if you want my stockers, but I really didnt think they'd fit because you have different crossmembers in the front
