Do you have any experience with sigma lenses?

Yup...they're a lot better now than they used to be. Sigma used to be considered a low end aftermarket lens brand but they're higher quality now. Still not as good as a big brand lens (Nikon, Canon, Leica, Zeiss, etc) but for a more affordable lens I would go with Sigma. I would stay away from Tamara and other cheaper brands

The faster the lens the better but they get pricey when they're faster than F/4, especially if they're zoom lenses. A 28 - 70mm F/2.8 lens is a fast zoom lens and probably the one I use 99% of the time I'm shooting. Or a 70 - 200mm F/2.8 if you need further zoom range

Lenses that do crazy zooming like 28 - 200mm are usually not very good quality, you lose quality with zoom. That's why prime lenses (fixed focal length ones, non-zoom) usually produce the sharpest images. But depending on what kind of photography you do, switching out fixed lenses all the time to get the range you want can be a PITA

Portrait photographers almost always use fixed/prime lenses for the sharp quality and depth of field the provide, like a 50mm F/1.4 or 85mm F/1.4

The 85mm is on the list just haven't been shooting anywhere near enough to drop 400+ dollars on it

I was thinking about getting the 18-300, just to pack less shit, but what you’re saying makes sense I guess.

very rarely do I feel like I want a portrait lens or whatever. I gotta zoom most the time.

yeah I could see a fixed lens not working so well for you...worst case it gets you eaten by a lion because you had to keep getting closer lmao.

A 28 - 70 and a 70 - 200 would be a good 2 lens system to work with IMO. Those are the two I have in my camera bag along with a 50mm prime lens. The 28 - 70 sees almost all the action though

It's crazy how much more expensive the F/1.4 is over the F/1.8. The two are identical except the F/1.4 will give you a fraction better light and shallower depth of field, I don't know if it's worth the additional $1000 though lol

If you really want to see a crazy expensive prime lense, check out the Canon 85mm F/1.2

18-300 is included in most nikon kit bundles. Its ok but after I switched over to the prime and starting shooting with those, that thing is now sitting in a box somewhere. Like Ryan mentioned, higher zoom = slower and less stability/more noise.

If you need a zoom then try to find the fastest zoom you can afford. Software can make up for quite a bit but if you absolutely require the best then its going to cost.

I have whatever lenses came with the little kit, sometimes a little more than 200 would be nice. Another lens wouldn’t be a big deal though.

Remember kiddos, always replace leaking axle seals, or you’ll end up like this guy with no gear oil and a smooth pinion

Ouch. Must have really been leaking bad and/or he just ignored it for a long time. I don't see how people can notice big oil stains under their cars and not think to do something about it, but then again most people are pretty dumb when it comes to anything other than putting gas in their vehicles.
