It gets even more silly when you realize that 2WD ORs have a rear locker AND brake limited slip, lmao

Brake limited slip is damn near useless outside the Starbucks parking lot in winter

Eh traction control has it’s place. At least in the Taco you can still get the wheel braking without throttle intervention

Even if you don't need 4x4, the way I see it you should always buy a truck with 4x4 anyway because the resale will always be higher and more people will be willing to buy it when you go to sell.

    Sol cal, brodozer here...

I think any form of off roading other than smashing through woops or bashing through dunes is incredibly bogus. How are you having any fun if you can literally step out of your truck and walk faster? Plus axles / CVs are just another thing to worry about or limit your travel and front ground clearance (snow plow effect). Buttttttttt ...with that said, I would still get a 4WD. If you ever have to follow your jeep friends you can still flex on them (literally), also remote Baja trips would require using 4WD to get unstuck or past obstacles. And if you use your truck, as a truck, it's nice to have the 4 Low gears to pull stumps out of the ground or pull a boat out of the water. My last two prerunners were 4WD. Having a "do it all" vehicle (like a King of Hammers car) is cool.

should have never sold it :(

You'd prob be fine with a 2wd OR but the price difference isn't really that much.
Gas mileage is the same. Might as well just get a 4wd.

Caveat—you still need chains to be the hero of your own story. Don’t make me tell the story again about the guys without chains trying out crawl control on their new Tacomas on the mild snow covered roads at Manker Flat and smashing into parked cars on the shoulder. Chains are real, especially with out CA freeze/thaw winters and steep grades.

The fact they even make an OR 2wd is laughable imo.

You happened to leave out what tires they're running.
Driving conditions vary. You don't need chains in all snow conditions. That's ridiculous. I'm not going to put chains on my truck unless I need them.
You can carry them, but I would not undervalue the role of 4wd in snow.

I converted my truck to 4x4 after having to put chains on to get up a hill in 2wd. Jeep saw me and was like I'll just yank you up, where the road was groomed a little ways later.
    Guy yanked me up chainless.

I would only get a 2wd truck if it never went off road. Like 100 percent pavement princess.

Never needed to use chains here in Colorado. 4wd and good AT or winter tires are more than enough.

I still say get the 4WD. But if that doesn't happen off roading a 2WD truck is basically all you need out here with places like the high desert, ocotillo wells, glamis & superstition so close. 90% of the trucks there are 2wd. Having some cool pop up tent and sliders on your "rig" is cool and all for IG likes but I assure you, it's not even comparable to mega hucking your POS 2wd 4cyl truck , you spent $20,000 on for a roll cage with harness, 8 shocks, air bumps and a fully floated rear axle.

Stop fooling yourself, you know you've always wanted to skull drag your truck 0.25mph over boulders in a nondescript off-road park for 'gram cred!

Get the 4x4 if you can afford it. You will be happy you did and people here can answer questions if the manual can't.
Welcome to T.World and remember buy and cry once!!
You live in the same crap state as I do and when I had a 2wd taco i wish i would of had a 4x4 not long after.
So when i could i did. Would never go back.
    Good luck Mike!

You like the K02 in snow?
I know they aren't snow tires but wonder if they are OK.

My mud terrains sucked!! Even though I'm in the snow a handful of times a year, I think I will be moving to an AT because of that.
