Honestly I think this thread is the only incidents I've heard of in third gens.

Considering how many are on the road the failure rate has to be quite small.

Wasn’t there one around the same time as this one. The dude that was arguing about driving down the road to his folks. Sounded like he had it red lined and swore there was no possible way it could’ve gotten traction briefly. So that would make only three I’ve heard of.

The only other two I can remember was a lady in Colorado and a guy in California, both had the rears lock up on the highway.

I could be wrong on what that issue was. Maybe he blew his transfer case. Just remembered something but couldn’t find it. I started to type something about a lady in a parking lot with her husbands truck until I went back and seen that was how this one started last March lol.

I blew my 2011 rear driving in the snow. Easy normal operation. Rear end is definitely another tacoma week link.

I've only ever seen this on 2nd gen tacomas and its always snow. People get stuck and one tire fire for too long. It make sense in this case because the truck likely did it every day of winter driving.

I use 4x4 anytime I need it. I never spin my rear tires even on shit ice.

Great assumption! Was driving normal. No tires spinning.I was responding to a state vehicle/highway plow breakdown. No beating on it.

Finally got it back from the dealer. Asked to get pictures from the mechanic but they called and said it was already packed up. Picture attached basically sums up what their conclusion was but I know nothing of differentials to make any sense of it...IMG_20200220_133355.jpg

Yeah I'm looking at a TRD off road now, I know the rear axle is a little different and if I end up blowing another one it'll still be in the warranty period, lol.

Yeah man. That's insane. Hard to imagine a ring gear bolt backing off. Wonder how long it was kicking around before it actually locked up.

Also super lucky they were able to trace it back to a cause that was covered under warranty. Most things like this are almost always put on the owner because it looks like abuse and is hard to trace. Kudos on them for putting the time in to find an actual cause.

That's pretty cut and dry though. Bolt backed off and grenaded the diff. Has to be warranty.

Well yeah. I just mean them actually taking the time to isolate the cause. Unless the bolt was still bouncing around in the inside (possible) they could turn around and point ar the owner.

Not like that’s never happened before. lol

So did OP get his replaced under warranty as well? Probably same issue then.

Both of mine looked exactly the same as OP. I really hope it was covered.
