No, there is only one PCV valve on the driver side...thats the onl tube that goes back up into the intake tract.

This post states otherwise. The last pic is of the passengers side vc. I haven't taken it all apart to see what's there. Perhaps just a vent tube from vc to intake pre throttle body, without a pvc valve? If thats the case, it's just plain silly.

My question is, to avoid the mess poster Bdbrown ended up with, has anyone done some preventative measures? Adding an additional pvc valve? 2 catch cans? One 4 port catch can? I was thinking of one can with a couple tees, but the length of hose running from the passenger side might be a bit long.

For someone who takes a lot of short trips, does the oil catch can make more sense?

yes. The catch can will maybe catch more of the water vapor since the short trips don’t give the engine as much time + heat to just burn it off. Can get the brown goo to maybe catch in the can vs under the oil cap ect.

Fwiw I took my can off. Was worried about moisture freezing in the lines during winter months. Also these motors are documented going hundreds of thousands of miles without catch cans. Sure they do something but im not sure they're worth the trouble unless you're boosted.

The PCV system and crankcase ventilation is by nature, very very warm. I would not worry about it freezing. I suppose a bit in the can could freeze, but that shouldnt hurt anything, and I assume would thaw in short order... There are similar rubber PCV lines in stock form and nothing freezes in those.

I agree on the 4.0 not needing it...itll suck through and burn the oil/water without problems...its more a novelty, but still not a bad thing if you are willing to check it every now and again.

^^^It has the drain valve on the bottom so I have some line running down to easily drain the can.

Im aware that this is really old but I am unsure of what it means... I noticed the passenger side vent too and it makes me wonder if not having a catch can on that line is why I get so much crud built up in my throttle body? I have cleaned it out twice in 70k on the truck. Once it starts to idle rough I pull the tb and clean the gunk blocking the air and it runs great afterwards. Would the catch can help in this regard and if so, would it do any harm running both lines to one can or would they need to stay separated?

I was hoping to hear someone say they installed 2 catch cans, one to each side. Here is the results...

Either nobody’s ever tried it, or someone did try but hasn’t posted the results, or the make up air thing means it’s not needed under normal gentle operation. I don’t think I drive normal gentle, more like hard acceleration, hit the rev limiter quite often. I believe it makes me a good candidate to guinea pig my motor with 2 catch cans.

Seeing how I live in smog nazi California, I’d have to remove it all prior to going to get smog checked.

I’ve had my 07 4.0 mt for less than a year. Changed plugs when I first got it, about to do my second oil change, haven’t cleaned the throttle body yet. I commute in a work truck so the Tacoma only gets driven on weekends and usually 1-3 times during the week.

The plan would be to clean the throttle body, drive it for about a month, then do the catch cans. Then drive for around 1000 miles, drain each can to see what they caught. I’m guessing the passenger side will catch very little, maybe nothing.

Cleaning the tb, I looked and don’t see a step by step. I’m guessing remove intake tube, spray with carb clean with the engine running, wrap a rag saturated with carb clean around a screwdriver and plunger action in and out to clean the really stuck on stuff. Suggestions?

The vapors get to the TB most likely when the engine has been shut down. Under normal operation, the fresh air is pulled in from the large hose behind the MAF sensor, on the passenger valve cover. Then all through the crank case, out of the driver side PCV valve, into the upper plenum of the intake.

Agreed, so I'm thinking if I did the guinea pig experiment described above, the passengers side can will have nothing in it. Then I look back at the pics @bdbrown posted of his mucked up tb and wonder if mine will look the same, or maybe his pvc valve was clogged closed. Uncertain, undecided, need to think about it further.

LOL, two catch cans? For an NA application that is street driven I have a hard time even justifying a catch can on the side it would actually catch stuff (betwen pcv and intake plenum). The other side is pointless IMO.

This is why I’m still debating the second catch can.

It sounds like air is drawn into the passenger side vc pre throttle body. So the passenger side can would be totally pointless.

Then I look at these pics, I definitely don’t want mine to look the same. I’m guessing his pvc valve had failed causing this situation. When I cleaned mine this past weekend, it wasn’t clean but not what I would call dirty enough to have an urgent need to be cleaned.

I’ll probably end up doing just the one can on the driver side. But between now and then I’ve got other more urgent projects. Replace the original spare from 07 that doesn’t hold pressure. Replace the leaking clutch master cylinder. Sway bar end links and bushings...
    Good point, but...

Those pictures you quoted are from a truck that was not maintained for sure and had a stuck PCV valve rendering the system useless.
