There's a WMA near my friend's house. We asked the guy that handles the whole place and he said to just have a fishing license and stay out during hunting season.

Makes sense. I forgot to mention that most of the WMAs are closed to non-hunting activities during certain seasons. Even less allow any type of dispersed camping.

Any of ya'll head out to Cherokee anytime, let me know if you don't mind. It's only about a 3hr drive for me. I wouldn't mind a bit of shooting either. Need to finish this Grendel build.

I’m live about 5 miles from it, I cut though sometimes if I’m going to Tenkiller or Jincys to eat. Did you know about it? Great little weekend restaurant by the southeast entrance, in an old country store that was used in the movie Where the Red Fern Grows.

I've only been to Cherokee once and Greenleaf three times. That's pretty cool, though. I'll have to check it out next time.

Don’t be in a hurry if you go, two sisters do all the cooking, limited menu, superb fried chicken. They cook it for you, not the next 20 people coming in.

Need some ideas on off the beatin path places to go camping. Light 4wd required if need be.

Born and raised in Arizona I know so many great places to camp and places that are well off the beatin path, but that's back in Arizona. Being here in OK for almost 6 months now, and want to take the gf out camping, but no idea where to go. Living in B'ville and work in Tulsa.

So far I have read on TW or via word of mouth about the following:
    1. K-Trail
    2. Grand Lake
    3. Ozark/Ouachita N.F.
    4. Keystone State Park

You are more than welcome to PM me instead of posting in here. Much appreciated and TIA!

Mr. @nfs257 , please chime in since I know you are from Bristol.

Anywhere in the Ozarks or Ouachitas has plenty of dispersed camping got to easily on FS roads. Side trails take you to less visited but accessible sites. Stop by a FS office, grab a map and go....it’s that easy.

    Sweet! Thanks man!

I will certainly stop by a FS office and grab a map. Between my Garmin Nuvi GPS and my phone having offline capability of Google Maps. I should be golden.

The NFs have lots of trails and you can camp just about anywhere. Make sure you use the latest Forest Service map (also available online). This guy has a great guide on using Gaia with a FS map to stay legal:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AG4tftcaUmI

I just got my RTT from REI OKC today. Just waiting for bed bars from BAMF. Next on the list to buy are sliders from Caliraised (easy pick-up, cheaper than shipping). I want the sliders before I consider the truck ready to hit the FS trails.

Do FS trails tend to not be very well maintained around these parts of the country? Or are some not maintained, which is typical even for the western US.

Do you all call them FS roads and trails or do you all have different definitions for FS roads and trails?

We AZTW'ers call anything maintained as FS roads and the non-maintained FS roads are just trails.

Just trying to learn you all's lingo. TIA

No idea. I personally call FS roads that because they are in a NF. I'm sure conditions vary widely based on use. There's lots of YouTube videos of people going through the Ozarks and some in the Ouachitas.
Probably a lot different than what you get in Arizona.
