Anyone know the size of the staked nut on the rear driveshaft flange when changing the carrier bearing? It's 24mm head but what is the threading?

    Standby.

I have one of these on order from the dealership. and i'll run a metric pitch gauge and see what I come back with.

You don't need a new one if you're careful about un-staking it. Mine did not come off so easily so I want to put a new one on.

Thats the flange nut you need. The part number is listed on the bag.

I'll run a feeler gauge when i get into the shop on friday, but as it stands, i sincerely doubt you can find a nut like this at a hardware store. I took this into my local Fastenal store, and they didnt have anything that would fit this bill. The nut flares up at the end to stake it.

I have a nut in the garage
I'll see if i can find it. I'm pretty sure it's metric. You can get them from Toyota.

    @Wulf
If we are talking the nut for the flange next to the DS support.

Below is from a 99 4wd shaft. A quick check shows the same pt# thru the years.

I measure a diameter of 18mm. That's a guess because I am measuring the ID of the nut at 16.3mm and adding my guess for thread depth against nominal metric sizes.
I calculate a pitch of 1.5 based on mm between threads. That would be 8 threads in a distance of 12mm = 1.5 pitch.
Caveat, it's a little rough measuring inside a nut but comparing this to "metric fastener charts" it looks right.

Based on that info I would spend your money on a cheapo 18mm 1.5 pitch die.

With all that being said you should be able to measure better since you are doing it on male threads.

With my cheapy Amazon calipers I came up with M18x2.0 but that doesn't seem right. My partner has a pretty comprehensive M16-M24 die set I can borrow; I just forgot to bring it back with me but I know it had M18x1.50 and M18x2.5. I figure I can chase it, slather it in red loctite, and stake a new nut on there and have no worries.

Probably have more info on my fix next week since I want to order a new nut from Toyota anyways

    18x1.5 would be my guess.
Toyota axle nuts with the 30mm 12 point nut are 22x1.5, I’d imagine this being 18mm diameter will also have 1.5mm pitch. Toyota’s favourite choice on larger diameter bolts

    Impacts are amazing things!

I have some messed up threads on my rear fj80 axle spindle after it fell off a jack stand a few times and its a bitch to thread it on there, but once I make it past the messed up threads it works all good, wonder if this could be the case here as well.

Hand thread it, gun it down and stake that bitch on both sides and dont worry about it again!!

Yea. I crank the impact all the way up, hammer down until it stops spinning and see if if have enough flange to stake the nut. If I can stake it, and the carrier bearing spins somewhat ok I call it good.

Tight enough to push the bearing on, loosen it. Then do like 50ish lb ft. Its in the carrier bearing sticky.
