Hey folks, while awaiting my new TRD Pro I've been putting miles on the amex and ordering all the parts for my initial build. I wanted to put this thread together to see if I could gather any tips as I'll be putting this truck together with a couple friends in a few weeks and want to make sure I don't run into any snags. If you guys have any tips, tricks or advice related to any of the parts or installation of these parts, please let me know. Also, let me know if I overlooked something.

I'm going to be taking this truck through some of the parks out west as soon as it's done. Lake Tahoe to Yosemite over to LV then Mt Zion, Canyonlands, Moab, then we finish our trip in Colorado. I don't plan on doing any major crawling, but I wanted to build a truck capable of anything. (I'm currently in a Jeep JK Unlimited with Fox suspension / lift, MT's on 35s, warn winch, rigid lightbar, steel bumpers)

So for my taco, I'm going for a bit more of a subtle look and hopefully it drives better and provides a bit more safety and comfort.

    Here's the build:

    Armor:
SSO Hybrid Slimline Stage 1 kit (I bought the stage 2 addons, but I'm going to roll with stage 1 for a while to see if I need to go higher clearance on the corners)
CBI T3 Rear bumper with no swingarms, no tire carriers, no nothing, just the bumper.
(Question: I don't see cutouts for the rear parking sensors, what do I do about that?)
    CBI full skids
    C4 rock sliders
    Gas tank skid
    Lower control arm skids
    Bed frame reinforcement
3M self healing vinyl wrap (pinstripe prevention)

    Lighting:
    Switch Pros sp9001
Baja designs 30" lightbar in the SSO slimline bumper, yellow
Baja designs s2 pro scene ditch lights, yellow
Baja designs squadron 2 sae fog light, yellow
    Baja designs Rock lights

    Suspension:
Icon Stage 9 kit with icon hydraulic bump stop

    Wheels / Tires:
33" KO2s on the trd pro wheels and maybe I'll get new wheels at a later date.

    Accessories:
DIMM for ram mount on dash
ARB Dual motor mounted in truck bed

    Recovery:
    Warn Zeon 10S
2 metal shackles, 2 soft shackles
    1 kinetic rope
    2 tow straps
    2 tree savers
    2 snatch blocks
    Shovel
    Axe

    Order of operations:
Truck goes up on the lift
    Factory bumpers come off
    Wheels come off
    Strip factory suspension
Take off TRD Pro skid plate
Remove factory bump stop from chassis
Install new Icon suspension and bumps
Mount lightbar and Winch to front bumper
    Mount SSO Slimline front bumper
    Run wires from winch, lightbar
    Install Switch Pros
Mount C4 rock sliders to chassis
    Mount T3 rear bumper
    Install all the skids
    Install bed reinforcement
Install ARB into truck bed, relocate air hookup
Run wires for ARB to engine bay
Install rock lights, run wires to engine bay
Make sure all accessories and lighting is wired to Switch Pros
    Mount wheels and tires
    Get it aligned
    Hit the dirt...

Let me know if I missed anything, or if you have any tips or tricks for any of the above. I've watched the installation videos and read through the installation manuals of all these products while I wait for them to arrive, but if you have any suggestions, I'm all eyes. Thanks all.

Will make a proper build thread when I have pics and progress to report. So far I'm just waiting on parts and to close on the truck.

I'll be documenting the whole build process as we're doing it on a tight schedule and then immediately putting it to work. My wife and I are looking forward to it as it's our big trip of the year. Will link to the pics / build thread when I get to putting that together. I'm excited as well

Hell of a project. Looks like you are working with quality parts, and a good plan. Have you already had the sliders, bumpers, etc, powder coated? Sure you have. Didn’t see extra gas can/s, maybe I missed it. Thing is, you’ll learn almost everything you’ll need to while on this trip, and it will be personal to you and your family.

I only have one thing you obviously missed:upload_2020-2-2_15-25-38.jpg.

Take pictures along the way, I’ll be watching.

    Good luck.

hahah oh man the infinite red rope liquorice for sure needs to be mounted in cabin somewhere :D

Thanks for mentioning the gas cans. Ideally I can run some rotopax in the truck bed. Will start looking for mounting options. Thanks for mentioning that.

and yeah everything is coming from the fabrication shops powder coated and ready for install

Welcome to TW. I didn’t see a cutoff switch for winch. Also you should easily be able to recover some cash with the Pro suspension.

Are you by chance related to Saudi royalty or something?

Your build looks legit, and I would agree that it's 1000% over built for your stated intended use. A stock SR5 is more than capable of what you've described.

If you're going to be spending a lot of time on the road (sounds like you are), I'd suggest something besides the digressive ICON shocks. They are very high quality (not to mention well marketed), but their damping design makes them have a rougher ride on the road than linear or progressive shock like Fox or King. You already have Fox shocks on the Pro, I'd stick with that, rather than spend another nearly 6 grand for the stage 9 kit.

But I guess I'm still just trying to wrap my head around the purchase of a Pro >$45k, just to immediately tear off all the Pro suspension, skids, etc... and replace with another >$15k in accessories? All that's left is the Pro badging, lol.

I do get mistaken for middle eastern at times

I do agree with you that for the inaugural run the suspension will be overkill, however I do intend on making road-trips and crawling or trails a more regular occurrence. My Jeep was a lot of fun but driving a lifted jeep on the highway with big tires is stressful so I expect the Tacoma will get me close to the crawling capabilities of the jk but a bit more reliability, safety and utility of a truck.

As for stripping all the parts off of it, I've always been into personalizing every car I've ever owned and I usually do suspension, wheels/tires, brakes. In this case I've also had the fox suspension on the jeep for about 7 years now and I'm not the biggest fan. After speaking with a tech at Icon I'm looking forward to the ability to adjust the dampening depending on what I'm doing. Plus with all the weight of bumpers and skids I'm not sure the trd / fox setup was going to handle that weight. We'll see I guess. A friend just installed this suspension on a 4Runner and they're liking it so far so I took the recommendation.

A friend of mine has an Off Road and he's basically going to build himself a TRD Pro now out of like new parts so he's pretty happy about that and like Gregw138 said I'll get some of that $ back, but I'll just give that to my wife. She's as excited about it as I am over the new truck.

About that... I'm actually just leaving it de-badged once wrapped :)

Don't put a fuse between it and the battery, but as posted above, they have solenoids you can use. That's just for winch power, so you don't have to have the thing powered all the time, and thus have a potential source for parasitic drain.

If you tear open the internals to rewire for an in-cab switch that probably voids the warranty, though.

Look into Diode Dynamic SS3 Sports for your fog lights. My understanding from the resident lighting guru is that they are the best fogs on the market right now.

So strange, I thought everyone ran it straight to the battery. I've had my warn straight to the battery on my jk for 7 years now and I've never had a dead battery believe it or not and the winch has been used plenty of times. I'll research adding this switch but I don't necessarily see the need.

Ah, all the parts are already here just waiting to take delivery and get to wrenching. I wanted to match the bd lightbar that's going in the bumper so I went bd all around. Those DD SS3s look pretty awesome from what I just saw on youtube. Will check out the fog test thread out shortly just out of curiosity.
