Very cool mounts pictured here. As a cyclist who worked in the retail end of the bike business I have to recommend something that doesn’t require front wheel removal. I’ve seen too many damaged fork ends, bent discs, and dangerously re installed front wheels. I realize some may not have that option but if nothing else it’s one less thing to do twice every ride. Then again I once carried my bike in my del Sol with both wheels removed (really bad idea) because I had no money for a rack after buying the car. Either way, good to see so many Cyclists here.

I dunno man. If you someone can't figure out how to remove and replace a front bicycle wheel... I mean, what happens if they get a flat on the trail?

I do agree it's a bit of a hassle, but the security and the bike not bouncing around on a tailgate pad is the tradeoff. My last bike was scratched to hell on the downtube and fork tube from tailgate pads, dust and vibration.

Mine is a homemade version of the Inno mounts.

Since this, I have brushed and painted the allthread and wrapped the QuickFist with self-bonding tape:

Yeah, that bolt looks awfully close to banging against the frame when the truck hits any kind of bump in the road...

Exactly. So like I said, I used some self bonding tape and wrapped that area. I might have also used a felt pad under the tape. Still, it was cheap to make, does the job, and no scratches.

I use a $15 foam bath mat I got from Target as my tailgate cover haha. It provides plenty of cushion and no one is really trying to steal it. Its good for quick rides, and I just throw it in the bed of the truck when not using it.

I also have Rocky Mounts front driveshaft locker thing. Designed for bed rails, I bolted it to my tonneau cover on an small 1" riser and it works great to lock the bike down. I then put a couple small D-rings on the cover by the back tire and use a small strap to hold the rear wheel down. I am able to open the cover without it hindering any movement. I like to use this when I will be leaving the bike outside if I have to run into a store or something.

I go with a 1up on a hitch mount or just chuck the bike in the bed because I really dont like taking my bike apart to get to the trail. I think the gate mat is the best way to carry2+ bikes in a truck.

When I joined the Air Force, My aunt gave me my great grandfathers wool blanket he used in WWII. She had used it as a drop cloth for painting and it had holes in it, but it was a nice gift nonetheless. I kept it in a bin to preserve it for about 16 years, and when I got my new bike about 2 months ago I decided on using it as my tailgate pad. I am sure someone will be offended I am not keeping this relic in a glass case, but part of me believes my Great grandfather would appreciate me using the thing for real and not having it sit in a bin. I also have a hitch mount but I think that is hokey as hell for a truck. I like the blanket because I can just throw it in a box until the next time, or behind the back seat. I will say though, I am going to look at target for a bath mat now that Reegsy posted that idea up. I have to add that many of these "lockable" mounts are a joke. The one for a standard QR skewer can be removed in like 20 seconds with a vice grip, the Thule one that goes over the tire can be defeated by deflating the tire, the rocky mount one, simply remove the thru axle, difficult, but not impossible. Any method you choose, have a cable or chain that weaves through the frame of the bike to at least slow the thief down a bit.

Similar concept to OP and other posters but I just drilled into the rail. Bought both Yak brackets for $30 shipped on Ebay and $4 in stainless hardware. Had to mount vertically (to the top of the rail) because my bike is a hair too long to fit straight in the short bed with the bracket mounted horizontally. Sorry my bike is so welfare!!!

The locking ones are pretty much a joke. They are more of a deterrent, any thief trying to steal stuff probably has the tools to do so in their vehicle. Given enough time they will find a way. More or less its just to stop some dickhead from seeing the bike in the bed and just grabbing it and riding off. I wouldn't trust any of the locking ones for any extended period of time, but for running into the gas station or grocery store quick they work alright.

I run these and they work great. I also have a couple of the old school yakima bolt down front fork mounts for bikes with QR axles on the front rail. That way I can haul any combination of axles at any given time. In addition to those, I have a Dakine DLX tailgate cover for quicker throw and go style rides or when I need to fit 4 bikes in the back.

People are stealing kings off of tacoma's in parking lots. Nothing is safe, lets be real, we are in the era of cordless power tools. Im sure everyone who clicked on this thread, is just looking for cool ways to transport their bikes around, specifically as the title would suggest "The Best Way to Mount Bicycles to the Toyota Bed Rails"

In the end we can all throw a blanket over the tailgate and call it a day...which IMHO is super convenient. Not much to untie, dont have to take off any wheels. But if you dont want stuff to rub, and you want to use the factory bed rail...then you click on threads like this to get ideas.

Good points, but I am a bit surprised about the Kings getting ripped off. Maybe the rears, but the fronts also? Are we talking about overnight parking or sketchy WallyWorld parking lots?

There have been times when I wanted to pull the cat protectors, but I know my luck.

This is quite hilarious. In High School I drove a Pontiac Fiero and used a Hollywood rack. In order to get more than one bike on that rack, we had to remove all the wheels. Our bikes were all beat to shit, not from our rides but from just getting to the mountain.

Okay. That is really funny that WallyWorld automatically gets tagged to walmart.com.:rofl:
