with the rear differential lock on?!!!

The wife got back home from the gym this morning and said, "Is there something wrong with the truck? The wheels "sqweek." "

Huh? What? What you mean the wheels "sqweek?"

So I go out get in the truck, start it up and guess what's on???
Yup, the rear diff. lock.
I come back inside and ask her how long was the truck like that? when did you notice it? how fast were going?

First noticed it returning from the gym [about four miles to the house]; speed: "about under 40 MPH"

That should be fine. The manual says you can't but that's nuts. I have a chevelle with posi and its like that all the time damn near a spool. As long as you don't get on it when you turn there should be no linear top speed.

 

My buddy has traveled with it on in speeds between 35-40mph hes doing fine in his truck.

I don't know why they put things like that in the book. I suppose it is to keep people from leaving it locked all the time. Really only hard on the unit when turning under acceleration.

 

At least you dont have 4wd too.

 

X2. the rear wheels normaly travel diferent distance when turning...inside wheel doesn't have to rotate as many times to go around a corner. when locked on dry pavement there is significant stress put on your third member as the inside wheel wants to turn less than the outside. you'll know if it breaks.

You know what she had done? She had confussed the rear diff. for the fog light switch -- go figure!

 

So how does the locker work on the Prerunner? Is it just on or off? On the 4x4 you have to be in 4wLo and stopped for it to engage.

 

- In Neutral
- press the "RR DIF LOCK" botton
- Into Drive

Operate at 5 MPH or less

- reverse operations to disengage

 

so by reading this its safe to assume i can get one with 4x4 and rear diff lock? so i can turn off when on pavement and on when in need offroad? or do i have to have one of the trd packages to get rear diff lock??

 

For factory, you have to have the TRD Off Road to get the locker. The TRD Sport has limited slip differential (no locker). I think ARB makes an aftermarket locker.

 

Hey guys. New to TW. I didn't know that the Sport models didn't have a locker. I'm glad I have the off-road package.

The last few times I've been out to Ocatillo Wells I've thrown my locker on and left it for most of the weekend. I don't know how well it is at turn off at exactly 5mph, but it does shut off at a certain point. I do try to remember to stop and shut it off before I hop onto the highway, but if I don't I don't worry about it too much.

Airing up before I left last time, I met another DC owner that said he's made it up Blow Sands (for those who know the area) just by throwing it on. His tires were bigger but they looked almost like street tires.
