I have a 2006 4 door longbed 4x4 obviously. Here is my question hope you guys can help me out.

A few weeks ago my dad borrowed my truck for the ranch and engaged 4 hi while the wheels were spinning in the mud. he said it engaged but it made a nasty sound. I was able to disengage it back to 2wheel but now my indicator light wont stop blinking nor will the truck engage. I really dont have the money to get it fixed at the moment but i dont drive my truck because i have a company vehicle. Is there a way to get the light to stop blinking by pulling a fuse? or a trick like how you get the maint light to turn off after an oil change? Has anyone else had this issue? any help would be awesome. I know there are quite a few posts about this stuff, but none seem to be my exact situation.

I just had the same exact thing happen to me last night. i was out mudding/offroading and a few times i engaged and then dis-engaged the 4hi depending on the trails. at some point in the trip the indicator just stayed blinking and it didnt feel like i was in 4wd anymore. i was hoping that someone already had a solution to this problem. I also remember hearing a horrible noise about the time the light just stayed blinking. Ive tried disconnecting the battery, driving backwards and putting it back into 4hi. nothing is working

    Okay a couple of things...

You can go from 2 hi to 4 hi while driving but not to 4lo - have to be in neutral. If you really have a problem. PM me, I will give you my number and walk you through it. It could be a couple of things but you will be okay.

Sounds similar to what happened to me last year after I returned home from deployment. My 4wd actuator went out on the beach, in the sand. what a PITA! Anyways, Toyota covered it under warranty, even with all the modifications done to my truck :D

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
Never is easier said then done, :)
Had same thing happen I was trying to make a turn up the hill and found myself on the iced road, with rear wheels spining. Had to get off before somebody would plow into me so turned knob while rear was spinning. It was massive clunk from the front but truck held its own. That actually seemed to help 4wd now it engages in a matter of second with no noise whatsoever . I guess it likes it rough :D

Thanks a lot yall. I still haven't got it fixed, but I only drive it once a week to the corner store and its about three quaters of a mile round trip. I got a pm about it possibly being the actuator valve. Any thoughts?

    yes.
Like Mr. Grimm, my 4wd just stopped working like you described minus the spinning and noise. I went to switch on the fly at a low speed & the light kept blinking & would no longer go into 4wd hi or low no matter what I did. In all my 4wd drive toyotas this was a first.
Took it into the dealer & they covered under warranty. The RO showed the front acuator part @ around 350 plus all the labor/diag the dealer charges Toyota claims.
Truck now has 50k with no 4WD issues since repair.

    Hope it ante that..

Mine only blinks on 4w lo and rear diff lock...that just means I didn't do it right....gotta stop, break in, clutch in, deep breath, then it engages or disengages. Never had a problem with 4w hi (knocks on wood) Always throw it in on the fly...but in neutral with clutch in.

Could very well be... They are susceptible to water damage!???????? I personally know guys that have had them fail more than once! WTF? Water damage to a 4wd transfer case actuator? Damn, I wish I had a shift lever!!! :)

Well after 1 more day of it blinking it just stopped!!!! i then checked to see if i could engage the 4wd and it did and when i turned it off it took about another day of it blinking again. today had to go back out to the trails it all happened at and it went into 4wd and out like it should!!! so it very well could be water causing it? but i have driven in deeper and pretty often, but all i know is that im very relieved its working again. and many thanks for all the advice and help from you guys, its one of the biggest reasons i love my taco! the support from other taco owners!!!!

Dam....I didnt want to hear this, this was one of the reasons I dumped my Dakota because it failed. I hope this is only a sporadic issue. Yes...a 4wd shift lever is the way to go.
