Trophy trucks are 2WD. Just go fast and make vroom noises and you'll never need 4WD.

I've also only actually needed 4WD once and that was in the super fine, clay mud outside of Zion.

I like to think 4x4 is like the bed of a truck, if you never have to use it...why did you buy a damn truck?!?!

This is socal. You don't need 4x4 to haul shiet around town, go to the beach or drive in the desert. Our mountains get snow plowed regularly so that tourist can spend their dough. All the roads in the city are so called paved. Once you drive some of them you will want a truck or suv with full suspension work b/c our roads suck. A lifted truck is great for driving over concrete barriers to get out of the parking lots without having to pay the parking fee and wait for the automated lift gates to open. The desert/fire roads are well maintained and don't require 4x4 to find a place to hunt/shoot/fish.

In Norcal or any other state you would probably want 4x4. In socal it really isn't needed for what most people do. I work for one of the largest US developers. Even at our Socal dirt barren land construction sites 2wd is fine. At our out of state properties 2wd won't cut it. And if you want a tough truck then FORD is the way to go. They simply out last the competition when it comes to daily construction work, payload in the bed, hauling heavy machinery and straight being abused. The company I work for has been in business over 80 years and has owned many different trucks over the years. FORD full size trucks can handle the work and take the abuse.

4X4 gets my vote...there is nothing I can think of a 2X4 can do that a 4X4 can't do - but the opposite is not true. Good luck.

Nor do I. Off Road 2wd owner, and I don't regret the purchase in the slightest. I'm very pleased with the trim package, and I have absolutely zero need for 4wd. I spend my disposable income on mods/upgrades inside the cab such as speakers all around, LED lights inside and out, and whatever else floats my boat. I don't cruise the mall parking lot or crawl the local Costco/Sam's, but I do have a daily driver now that I absolutely enjoy every minute of driving up and down the road. At 40, never have and never will require 4wd. If the zombie Apocalypse hits, and I actually do find myself needing a 4wd to trudge through rows of undead, I'll upgrade at that point.

If there is a Zombie apocalypse and you need a 4WD, you will undoubtedly be able to find one out in the wild.

I will most definitely have my pick of the litter. For now, I'm just as happy in the Off Road 2wd I drove off the dealer's lot.

That's how my buddy describes his 2wd pickup as well.
Not surprisingly, he also tells people his geo metro is a F1 car because they both have 13" rims.

LOL it’s a joke. you don’t need 4wd. Just nice to have a big truck that you don’t have to worry about bottoming out the car. My Lexus would bottom out in several areas around Westwood/Culver City when I was in school at UCLA (20 years ago, don’t know about now). The front wheels would fall into a pot hole and drop the car enough that it would slam on the bottom of my ride. There’s a few roads in Fullerton that are super messed up that will shake the crap out of your ride. And if you don’t slow down at some of the rail road tracks you easily catch air. There are also a few dips at street crossings that will get you some air as well. Some of the tracks around Ontario/chino where our company owns property have also just tore right into several of the Tesla tires causing multiple flats. Those tires suck around job sites. Things just happen.

You’d probably make up the difference with the 4x4s better resale value being in California. Depending on how long you keep it anyway

Especially if it’s a secondary vehicle

Everyone said it but if you never go off road the 2wd is fine but if you even remotely want to get lost and explore and its not going to be a pre runner build get the 4x4. Give you the option if you need it. You can go skinny pedal on a lot of places but if your deep in some national parks or trails using 4LO not only gives you better traction but also helps protect the trails. I am a fan of over building for the moment I will need it but of course if you are only cruising around town save some coin but being from CA we are hours away from just about everything from deserts to forests to snow.
