I print labels, mainly for the automotive industry.

I have to measure the print on the labels. I get a drawing with about 90 different measurements. Now. I have to perform an MSA on my measuring device. There are like 6 different types of "gauges" that test the accuracy of the measuring device. This has to be done annually. 3 different operators have to measure the same 10-20 labels, using the same measuring device, measuring the same measurements on the label. The differences in the measurements between operators is documented and creates a margin of error for the measuring device, while also creating standards of operation for how to use the measuring device.

The measuring device (a microscope) has to be calibrated to an NIST certified rule that has to be replaced every three years.

All documentation must be kept for the life of the tool/gauge etc.

Once my measuring device is "approved" I can then measure the print on the label. I also have to measure the label itself in height and width to prove it is the right size as well as that the radius of the corners is the correct radius. These measurements have to be withing .5 mil.

Once that is complete, I have officially completed one part of a PPAP. Our PPAPs are 9 different parts. All similarly rigorous and detailed.

This, is all barring any issue with any previous step. If there is an issue with the MSA, the entire process has to be redone after the measuring device is recalibrated.

I havent even gotten in to the AIAG standards that surround packaging and labeling practices for products.
