Disable "Manual Transmission Safety" On Viper Starter

Hey guys, I recently had a Viper 2 way alarm/starter installed on my truck. I really like it, but i REALLY hate the hoops I have to jump through to be able to start the truck. Stop the truck -> Put in neutral -> pull ebrake -> leave foot on brake -> scratch butt twice -> press tiny button on tiny remote -> pray to god you did it in the right order, and for the love of god, don't forget anything in your vehicle.


So my question, I know safety is a concern, but i NEVER ever leave my vehicle without the ebrake pulled, and i NEVER leave it in gear, and rarely does anyone else ever drive my vehicle. Is there a way I can override the Manual Transmission Safety? I hate the hoops, i wish i could just start it whenever without having to have made a pre-emptive attempt at making sure i jumped through each hoop.

 

I know your pain.....I just had a 5301 installed on Oct 1st.......it makes me wonder why I didn't get an automatic.

 

What model is it? You can change it just by setting the unit to automatic instead of manual. If it is one of the newer one then the valet button is on the antenna. The setting is #1 in menu 3. You have to have a door open then turn your truck to ignition then turn it off. Hold the valet button and you will hear the siren chirp, keep holding it until you hear it chirp 3 times now you are in menu 3. Push the valet button again then one more time and hold it. The siren will chirp once, when you hear that chirp hit unlock on the viper transmitter and the siren will chirp twice. Turn the truck back on then off again and your done. If it is an older model the valet button will be somewhere else in the truck then on the antenna, it's the same sequence with that button.

If the shop that installed it used a bitwriter to program the unit then your SOL and you have to take it to them to do the programming. GL

Definitely NOT a cool guy mod. If you live in a climate that's cold, snowy and icy then automatic car starters are great. When it's in the teens and your car is all iced up you can quickly remedy all that without having to go out in the crappy weather. It's also nice in the summer because you can cool your car off before you get in.

 

I think he's refering to the *Cool Guy Mod* as bypassing a safety system just for the sake of simplicity. Which, in all honesty, i'm okay with it

That being said... I never stated I agreed with disabling a safety feature. I simply said that they are not just a "cool guy mod" and do provide a certain level of functionality. It's nice when you're at work and can start your car that's parked 200+ yards away in a parking lot when it's 15 degrees outside and is blowing snow. There's nothing lazy about that, it's called being smart.

 

I live without one everyday, but I know a number of people that have them. If/when I ever get an automatic vehicle I'll consider installing one.

 

Same could be said about the microwave and cell phone but you have both of those right? Technology and evolution is a beautiful thing.

 

Yes, that is exactly it. The newer units from the factory come default in manual transmission mode, what you are doing there is setting it to automatic so it disables the manual safety features...

No shit man, hard to even remember when cell phones weren't around. I get excited to see a pay phone and that's all we had when I was a kid. Plus a super cool beeper!

Anything invention that can make people lazier then they already are is a gold mine!

 

Automatic vehicles weren't necessary but people have them, if you think about it most things aren't necessary until you have them and that becomes the norm. In 20 years every car will come from the factory with a remote start.

Nah, I answered it for him. All he has to do is the sequence I posted and that will take care of it

 

I'm not saying I disagree with you. I install remote starts for a living and my business partner had one on his manual trans dakota and left it in gear one day. $700 and part of his back yard fence rebuilt later, he pulled it out. If you're going to have one in a manual trans truck then use the safety features that are there for a reason. I personally won't do them in my shop on manual trans, too much liability to make a couple hundred bucks. Shit, I have manuals and I don't have one in my own personal vehicles

 

ok ok ok, i know im going to hell anyways, but for the sake of argument, could you hook it up so it needs to have the ebrake pulled?

 

Not really, not without some custom wiring. you would need to hook the neutral safety switch wire to the ebrake and it would only start when it was grounded. It CAN be done but it kind of defeats the purpose of changing it. Basically it already is hooked up to that as well as a couple other wires that make you do that sequence when you get out of the truck. Changing it to just the ebrake wouldnt really do much compared to how it is now, besides it'll still jump with the ebrake on. If you're going to put it into automatic mode just do it like that and make SURE you always leave it in neutral or park it without anything in front of it ever.

Just so you know, a viper remote start is going to try to start 3 times before it gives up, so if you leave it in gear it's gonna buck then stall, buck then stall, and buck then stall. Could fuck your truck up pretty good if it goes down. Just be careful if you're going to do it.

 

holy crapsh*t it worked!!!!! thats exactly what i wanted! Now... I'd like to test it out... What would happen if i pulled the ebrake nice and tight **like i always do** and tried to start it in gear? I want to try this just for the sake of science, but want to know if there will be any really negative effects... thoughts? **where is my flame-away emoticon**

 

Of course it worked!!! I wouldn't worry about burning anything up if you just try it once at the same time its definitely isn't "good" for you truck, also it might be good to know what you'd be dealing with if it was left in gear. Just find an empty parking lot and give it a shot if you really wanna know.
