My truck topper (ARE V series with 2 knobs) was pried into last night, and I was amazed he didn’t set off my ridiculously sensitive alarm. It looks as though as it was extremely easy, and the thief got away with way too much expensive recovery gear.

I am now in the market for something more secure. Whats the most secure topper out there? I still want windows etc but I am mainly worried about the locking mechanism.

If you drive through the Midwest I’d be happy to take your current topper off your hands

I don't think any of them are great. I have an ARE dcu and it seems reasonably secure, but not great.

Might be better of looks for better ways to secure the one you have or wiring it more closely into your alarm.

Toppers only keep honest people honest. If scumbags want in they will get in.

I think I’m gonna consider a trade in but I drive Denver-Boston every summer so I’ll keep that in mind.

Do you have the single knob in the middle? If so any pics of the mechanism?
I upgraded to a two way alarm so
I think I’m going to have a shop install another sensor in the bed.

I know, I took all my stuff out but it survived around Denver in the back
for 2 years so I thought I was good. I think a backpack was finally what caught their eye. Shitty scumbags

Looking at the Z series- anyone have one? This guys looks nice. Seems like it’d be harder to pry than the locks on the sides

Have you also considered a front and rear dash cam? Some models offer motion sensor activation if you have the cameras directly wired into an always hot power source instead of running off the accessory outlet. Could have got a nice mugshot of your theif on the rear camera.

Yes, I have one and it isn’t great. I installed sliders myself the other day and my back camera went out, so I think I pinched a wire or something, and obviously this happened right after. The front cam somehow didn’t pick him up, I think it must have went to low power mode cause it stopped picking things up after 2 AM and it happened around 5 AM (I have been trying to get all I can off my stock battery but I think it’s time for an upgrade). I actually ordered the top of the line blackvue 2 ch yesterday.

Had an ARE Z Series for quite a while. Fantastic quality, but good god do you pay for it. As far as security goes, I mean, I really can't imagine it being any more secure than yours. I'm not sure that any other standard topper would be more secure than what you had. You able to file a claim?

Thanks for your input. I think the single handle in the middle is more secure cause you can't really pry open the locks like on the V series with two side knobs, but I haven't actually checked them out in person.

Yes, filed a renters insurance claim and they're working on it. Good news is the apartment hired someone to monitor the cameras full time and one of the scumbags came back last night and was arrested trying to steal a bike, so I hope I can get some of my stuff back even though the chances are slim.

Thanks. Yeah last year someone ripped my pro grill off my truck. They did a very sloppy job and it was definitely unusable after they were through. Got a db customs so they can't rip it off again. I have accepted our trucks are targets especially in Denver.

Oh crap. I remember seeing that posted. Getting hit twice is just unfair. I also remember a couple other posts about stuff getting stolen in Denver, like spare tires and such.

My best and definitely most useless advice for you would be a garage.

Around here, it has been said that police just DGAF about property crimes.

I have the are cx and I can tell you single turn in the middle and unless they get both sides to turn at the same time I can’t see it opening. I have a swing out on my bumper that also sits in front of the latch so they’d have to open my swing out, to get the topper to open then. Granted if they really want in nothing in their way but some thin glass. Did you have locks on both sides of your knobs ?

Sweet thank you. Yup, both sides were locked and they pried each side open. Looks like they knew what they were doing cause they pried perfectly one time on each side and didn’t set my alarm off.

I pay extra for a “secure” garage. Turns out thief's are squeezing through the gates. *facepalm*
