A local Toyota dealership (not where I bought it) called me today and said my 2014 is subject to a frame recall and I needed to schedule a frame inspection. Do they do this by phone?

I ask because I'm getting plastered with offers to buy my truck and half feel like this is an attempt to get me in so they can say, "Looks good. We'd like to buy it."

I know the frame isn't rusty because I basically live underneath it on weekends (sometimes maintaining stuff and sometimes just hiding from the wife). And I thought recall notices would be mailed by Toyota corporate and not a phone call from a specific dealership.

    What say you all?

Might as well go get it checked anyways, just bring it to another dealer and have them check the vin and stuff, the inspection takes 15min. Even if its fine you can get them and they will seal it and protect it from any bad frame rust down the road. Just had it done on my truck this week. If they say they wont then talk to a service manager as they pretty much have to

I could believe some might call but I’d still want the letter from Toyota. I got 2 of them just recently for mine. Keep in mind I’m Canada tho.

I got a call from a dealer for a recall before. They are trying to drum up business. Funny the first response is "scam!" Toyota dealers did this to me and it was a legit open recall.

The warranty extension inspection/frame treatment is definitely a thing. Mine was inspected a month ago and goes in to be sprayed tomorrow. They will have it 3 days they said.

So, basically the 2 days they want to keep it is because they want to spray coat it after the inspection?

Can I refuse that part? I seriously see no issues with my frame after 6 years of ownership. I feel like spraying it now will just hide potential problems.

Judging by your location I suspect I got a call from the same dealer on Tuesday. I too did not buy from this dealer but I did use them for a few free oil changes while I qualified for those a few years back.
My first reaction was that they were spamming me to get me to return for service again but I stayed on the line when they said it regarded a recall. They mentioned needing to order parts for the recall (might those be the frame plugs?), that the recall would take 2 days, a rental would be provided as part of the recall. I said fine order the parts, they'll contact me when the parts come in. I'll have more questions then.
I have received the card in advance of the recall but not the full official letter yet. I'm in a similar boat that my truck isn't my daily driver and is only used sparingly in the winter, I've applied fluid film since new etc. I have little concern about my frame now but do want the recall coverage on my frame for the next 6 years, I may need to run it in the winter, I may need to sell at some point and am sure the buyer would want it covered.

To get the rest of the story, as to whether the phone calls are a regular thing, I came here this evening and found your post. If you've never been to this dealer at all I suspect they must have a list and are making these calls based on zip code/distance from the dealership. As for those letters from dealerships offering to buy your truck those have been a constant part of my life since I bought my 2009 that preceded this truck, a tactic to get me on the lot and shopping.

They gave me a 3rd gen loaner for 5 days, so I'm going to check on the cabin this weekend! Road trip!

Well...guess what showed up in the mail today? My inspection/recall letter from Toyota.

I'm going to wait until this summer so I can thoroughly clean the frame myself before I have them coat it.

I was under it today greasing the zerks and I see no rust issues...yet.

@roundhouse I had my battery replaced under warranty by the dealership that called me, other than that I've never been there. They're a Toyota dealership located in Maplewood, MN.

Yep, same dealer. I too got my letter today. If I have them coat my truck first I can post up here about how it goes.

the dealers get to bill Toyota corporate for the work. It's not retail book time its warranty so its a little less but it can still be profitable for the dealership if they have a few techs that can do the frame swaps fast.

They got word that your truck qualified for inspection before you got the letter so they cold-called you trying to drum up some business.

Wow! You guys are lucky. I got my letter and called my selling dealer for an inspection. They said it would be a $130.00 fee. I called corporate and they said the dealer can charge for an inspection.

That sounds completely wrong. Part 1 of the Warranty enhancement is the inspection. Part 2 is the coating OR a frame replacement.
