how do you like that jetboil? worth buying?

I would have taken my pants off and hung them in the tree with the food bag! lol.


something I always take with me (because I sacrament a little weight for a good meal)
1st day: I prepare at home precooked rice, frozen broccoli, uncooked chicken breasts (diced up), and anything else I want to add. put it all inside aluminum foil (layered a few times with PAM on the inside), throw it in the freezer all night and once you get to the first camp site, it will be still somewhat frozen.
2nd day: I pour Skyline chili into an empty gatorade bottle and heat that up in my cook set along with some ramen noodles. everyone is jealous as they eat their add hot water bag meals. the next nights after all that is the instant meals.

 

^i agree...i am willing to sacrifice some wieght and room for a good meal. it makes the whole experience better

 

I love it. I boils super-fast. I can make 16oz of boiling water in less than 2 minutes. It packs up compact, with the canister, stove and stand all fitting into the cup part. It's basically windproof, with the piezo and burner encased in a windscreen.

The only drawbacks is that it's kinda bulky (big-ass pot is a lot larger than an MSR Whisper shoved into a camp mug), it's a canister stove (not great in the cold) and it can be unstable, since it's all vertical.

I only use mine to boil water. I did buy some attachments to use the Jetboil Group Cooking System (1L soup pot) with it if I want, but I haven't had the need, yet.

I actually did. It was a cold, cold walk in the morning to get that thing out of the tree.

This is a lot like a meal I make for first-nights that I learned in Boy Scouts. The old-school Foil Pack.

Throw a frozen beef patty in some foil with sliced potato, onions, carrots, salt, pepper, and Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. Wrap it up and when you get to camp, throw it on the fire for 20 minutes.

I made them for my girlfriend the first time we went backpacking, now she wants it every time.

 

I might get the jet boil in the spring then since it isn't that great for the cold. Bulkiness is another thing I dont like that much about it. My whisperlite stove packs up super small but set up and then having to wait for the excess gas to burn off is kind of annoying. Not to mention the huge fireball the thing makes.
I am going to have to try that recipe. Sounds pretty good! I wish I could find a chick around here that likes to go backpacking. lol most of them are mall queens and need their serta mattress as night.

 

haha same here except you will run into one every now and then that will take you camping and wanna stay out longer........only if you do the right things tho

 

I do love how it fires right up. It's turn knob, press piezo, BAM!, flame.

If you bring a full canister with you out in the cold, it shouldn't be a big deal.

Yeah, the GF is good about doing that kind of stuff. I've got her almost completely set up with gear, except a women's pack. She's using my old REI for now.

Next thing is to convince her we need to mod the Tacoma so we can penetrate deeper to get to less-accessible trailheads and campsites.

I've also looked into the Jetboil system. I thought it was too bulky and I didn't want to carry around a bunch of attachments as well. I like the MSR pocket rocket or superfly, small, cheap and to the point. Right now, I have a tuna can with holes drilled in it. I use denatured alcohol for the fuel. Its nice and light, boils water fairly fast. I need to invest in some non-stick pots though. the cheap cook-set at Wally world sucks!!!

 

REI has some good options on cookware, but im getting mine off ebay.
I got a camping trip planed for early november....any one got a one burner stove they recommend?

Look at the MSR Pocket Rocket, Superfly, or Brunton Raptor, they are simple single burner stoves. The pocket rocket is light, durable and cheap. The superfly is a slightly better design IMO and is like 15 - 20$ more than the pocket rocket, still as durable and very simple to use. and the Raptor is very similar to the superfly in design. I would read reviews on Amazon for both. Hope this helps!
