TRD Suspension on a 2.7L?!?

I really wanted a TRD. Although I never drove a 2nd gen TRD (because I would have bought one), I really wanted the Bilstein shocks on my Tacoma, but I had to have a 4 cylinder (too many highway miles). Unfortunately, Toyota doesn't make a TRD 4 cylinder in the 2nd gen Tacomas.

So, here is my question - Has anyone looked into upgrading an SR5 2.7L PreRunner/4x4 to Bilstein suspension? I am curious how difficult/expensive this would be.

It would be easy. Just swap out the struts/shocks.

 

The shocks and struts would be an easy swap, but don't the TRD's have different springs as well? I could be mistaken.

 

I'm quite sure the springs are dependant on body style (like access cab or DC or regular cab) and not on the engine size...its possible the v6 has slightly heavier front springs because the engine is heavier however even if it does you wouldn't want them on a 4 cylinder anyways unless you wanted to lose a few teeth.

 

What I want to know is when is someone going to make some freakin urethane bushings for the truck all around. I'd buy a set in a heartbeat. Energy needs to get with the program.

Those are different than the trd bilsteins. better but different.

Oh and you still dont' have yourself a trd you need the little decal! haha you knwo decals add 5hp each!

 

there better shocks and you still pay less than the TRD package well you don't get a the bed outlet or ...YES Mudbug the 5hp each decals! don't get Blinded by the TRD Blistien's there are many other good company's out there that will give you the same or better preformance as the TRD pack. With all the different options out there for suspension, how do you choose. I know I can't put one set on, see how I like it, and then go to the next set. If I had that kind of money, I wouldn't have bothered getting a 4 cylinder.

It is my understanding that the Bilsteins are a smoother ride. Is that correct? What is the difference off-road? What is the difference between the Bilsteins and the Ranchos?

...are adjustable, but if they give you ~2" of lift then why are people doing lift kits?

I think I am more confused now than when I started.

 

most peeps are going with a 3" lift.

 

If i were going to put shocks on i would use the 5100's. i think by now everyone knows about my bilstein fetish and those are very good shocks and i like the fact that they are adjustable.

Mudbug, i hate to say it but you're wrong... my TRD decals give me an extra 20hp. That combined with my bottlerocket tailgate rig makes me one of the fastest trucks on this site

Found this old thread... Guess I don't have to worry about this anymore. I have TRD suspension and a pair of 4 leaf rear springs!

 

I'm wondering if the used 05 2.7 I just purchased already has the Bilsteins or not. How would I tell if the TSB had been performed by looking at my suspension?

 

Count the leaf springs in the back. If there's 4, the TSB has been done. 3 means it hasn't.

I saw on another post that you mentioned possibly getting an LSD for your 2.7- have you found one that works with our drivetrain?

 

Do you guys know if I got an access cab 2.7L with the standard p215/70r15 tires and I replaced them with the P245/75R16 (the standard prerunner tires) would it sit at the same height as a normal prerunner? or would I need a lift?

 

You'd need a lift. Different wheels, tires, suspension, axles (I think), gearing...
