Oh Duane, that area is a blessing to man kind.
I lived in Meadow Valley to for a bit. Used to rent from Carol and dorris hill. Was awesome right there. Best view of Spanish peek.

You know of the CG's close by then.
Dr. Herndon sold his place at Tollgate and bought the Hill property.
Guess Soper Wheeler developed the adjacent land and when it was offered for sale, Michael bought it too.

I new it sold but never looked to find who got it.
It's ok now because Soper Wheeler is closing the doors was told by a few of the higher up foresters. It's crazy because they have timber land in almost all of north and south America as well as New Zealand and Australia. crazy.

I knew you lived out here from previous years posts.
Wonder who will buy SW land, SPI? Getting tougher to log or more competitive?

Yes. Love hate relationship. Don't use it much with the dog now. I have four other tents too.

Anyone know any open beginner friendly trail on the way to South lake Tahoe? We don't check in till 4pm and planning to leave the bay area really early so we can try to hit up some dirt road.

I get the impression that the main road is open just don't go down any side roads. I think the main road might be paved for a good portion but it's high enough that there could still be patches of snow. In the summer you can take it from 50 to 88 but I think they close the gate on the 88 side in the winter.

I called the ranger station last week and was told the whole thing is closed for the season. I don't remember which ranger station I called.

Edit: I'd call again. I don't always trust ranger stations to give me accurate information.

I might just cautiously check it out in person and see what's up. If it's closed it's cool, I don't expect much places to be open going towards South lake Tahoe.

I'll update here tomorrow about the conditions just incase someone is curious.

Better do it soon, they close the gates in March, when the snow melt starts to get too sloppy. Call before you go.

Per #2 a 4wd vehicle appears to be allowed. And, since wheelchairs are specifically cited as not being a vehicle, they should be fine too. Not sure I'd recommend using a wheelchair through snow drifts. You could get stuck and eventually freeze to death.

Anyone going out this weekend? Saw a note about Hollister Hills, but thats a bit far for me this weekend. New to NorCal so haven't learned any places yet :( Would love to get out for an out and back, or even overnight. Coming from Rocklin.
    Cheers!

Checked out MET as a little detour towards South Lake Tahoe earlier today. The main road is open and after driving a few miles some trails are either open or gated off.

The ones that are open do have slushy mud. I'd be careful going in solo.
