Transmission whining Noise ,Need help!

    I have a 2003 Toyota Tacoma prerunner,v6,A340E Transmission..was daily driver, then the truck got parked for about five years, it did get started and drove every few months to keep it going. Recently when I started to drive it I noticed a "whining noise from the transmission, sounds like power steering noise kind of. But go's away when the transmisson locks up in overdrive..I thought at first it could be a clogged trans filter, and wasn't getting fluid to the valve body ,
    So today I changed all new solenoids ,changed filter, and all new fluid in it, and still have the same noise..
    also my gas mileage use to be 17.-19.5 mpg.now its 12-13 mpg..
    The only thing I can think of is its the Torque Convertor ???
    If anyone maybe can guide me in the right direction on this i would appreciate it ..

    well broke down and spent 1,125.00 for new Factory Toyota torque converter,. Ill keep you'll updated..99% sure its the converter!!wish me luck

    Good luck! You've certainly put in the money to get you some good luck at least! Your symptoms certainly can be symptoms of a bad torque convertor. Not a common failure but does happen.

    yeah I know its a gamble spending the money on a new converter, I need a new one either way, even if I have to rebuild trans.

    Do not put a converter in . Take it back to the dealer

    why do you say not to put a converter in??I was going to replace the converter and transmission oil pump..
    inless you have ran into the same problem and know more of whats going on??

    If your truck is a 2003 , you purchased a torque converter from the dealer with 2003 technology . The aftermarket has advanced their converter internals since then and for much much less money . You are going to pay $ 350.00 for a better converter than a factory converter .
    Maybe we can save you a few bucks
    How much debris was in the bottom of your transmission pan ? Was the filter clogged ? Did the magnets have a bunch of metal on them ?

    The noise you are hearing is most likely the pressure regulator inside the valve body but these converters are also known for fins breaking off and causing noises
    Have you scanned for codes ?
    Are you sure the fluid is topped up ? Whats the mileage ?

    There was material on the magnets in the pan, the filter was not clogged, had a little partials on it though. Have not scanned for codes yet, the fluid is topped off, and has fresh fluid in it, the truck just hit 170,000k
    Called Toyota and the guy said he could get me a remand Transmission with torque converter ect,all with warranty for 2536.82 plus1000 core charge. Thinking just going to return the converter and buy the remand trans and call it a day. Because even if I do the converter and pump, and it does fix my problem, but for how long? right?..So if I do the trans,that will probably star to motivate me to let my boy Dave start to build my motor!!:)
    Is there a place that you suggest getting trans from??Toyota,,, LC engineering ,,

    I really do appreciate your time ad help with this. If you have and suggestions on where to get the best remand Trans fr this truck let me know Thanks again..

    You could always call around to a few reputable transmission shops . I am positive they can beat that price and the warranty as well .

    update:
    Toyota wanted 2800.00 for Factory Remand Transmission, I know I could have got it for cheaper, but just wanted the piece off mind getting it from them,,
    Found a local shop that ordered the transmission though Toyota direct and only charged me 2,350.00..and no up from core charge ..good people ..
    then once it comes in (3-4 days) going to have them install because of how good there customer service is..
    Total out the door for transmission ,fluids and installation, for factory remand trans from dealer..2932.56!! that's with Toyota torque converter too.
    I can live with that ,the trucks been good to me over the years, its just a little pissed I let it sit..lol..

    well in tell my new trans comes in probably going to the desert and going to beat the shit out of the one that's in there now..

    In a case such as yours , it could be a pump issue or valve body related .
    The only thing that turns when the truck is in park is the torque converter , the input shaft , pump and the forward clutch .
    When you select drive range , the transmission asks for a boost in hydraulic pressure to lubricate the gearing and apply the forward clutch . If for some reason you have worn components , the transmission will go to maximum pressure in order to fulfill the lubrication and pressure demands . Whats your mileage ?

    Could it just be that it needs some new fluid and a new filter? The only record of any trans service was from about 5 years ago from the previous owner

    Whats your mileage ?
    5 years is a long time to go without a trans service .
    When you pull the dip stick , what does the fluid look like ?
    You could pop the trans pan off and check to see what the magnets and the bottom of the pan and filter look like .
